Kassidy could only hope they all remained unharmed as that pull came back to her, tugging her into a new direction. Her fear of the water and the creatures in it fell to the wayside, the pull of a crystal overriding her senses. “Where are we going exactly?” Xak asked, taking easy steps and being careful not to kick up the water too much. “There’s a crystal around here,” Rio answered after she failed to, wholly focused on her magic and the pull of said crystal. “And why is it that you seem to answer for her a lot lately, Hawthorne?” Xak asked, his words clipped. “Subtle, aren’t you, Harlowe?” Rio replied flippantly. “I have no idea what you mean.” “I’d like to believe you’re smarter than that.” Xak scoffed. “Smart enough to know exactly what’s going on.” Kassidy spun on her heel, making the two behind her come to a stop. “Are y’all seriously arguing right now?”

It also taints many of your memories—” “Stop it.” Everyone froze when Kassidy dared to interrupt the ancient fey who only kept staring at her, his head now cocked as if he didn’t understand. She only shook her head and Ezra could easily see the sheen of tears forming, but she didn’t turn or back away. “I don’t need to hear that my memories are sad. Stop using your magic to read my mind or whatever.” The Owl blinked for the third time, and Ezra knew whatever the fey had seen in Kassidy softened his resolve a bit. What did he see to cause such a reaction?

“It doesn’t snow here but it does get cold.” She sat straight up, the motion almost making her dizzy as her brain made a sudden connection. He’s never left the castle so—“Wait, so you’ve never seen snow?” He shook his head. “Never.” She gripped the back of the chair to steady herself as if she would slide to the ground at any moment. “We should build a snowman while we’re there.” She didn’t miss the faint uptick of his mouth before he spoke again, “You’ll probably have more important things to do.” What was more important than playing in the snow for the first time? Her thoughts were becoming muddled, unable to focus on the topic at hand. It took her a minute to realize she was now hugging the back of the chair to keep herself from going to the floor. “It really does feel like you’re drunk, huh?” Another half smile from him. Why didn’t he do that more? He was so handsome when he smiled. “I warned you.”

Rio waited for Xak to follow, but he stayed where he was; he folded his arms across his chest, a very strained smile on his face like he knew once Kassidy was out of earshot, he would drop the pleasantries. Fine. He copied the guard's stance. “Go on, Harlowe.” That polite smile did drop into a frown, that picture-perfect mask of calmness falling, and Xak shook his head at him. “You are still so glaringly obvious, Hawthorne.” His brows shot up at the same time Xak’s did. “Am I wrong?” Rio shrugged, knowing the flippant attitude got under the guards skin the most. “I happen to think I’m being very subtle—” “Do you like her or not,” Xak growled, the sheer force behind it catching Rio of guard, “because I swear to the entire Realm, Prince, if you are merely playing with her—” “You’re gonna spit blood the next time you spit out that title at me,” Rio warned. He wouldn’t follow through for Kassidy’s sake, but it was tempting. “But no, I am not playing with her.” Nothing about this felt like playing, if anything it was unnerving how desperate it made him feel.

Something in his gaze softened again, those cat-like eyes reflecting the stars like little golden galaxies. “Do you know your eyes glow when you use your magic?” Kassidy blinked. She had no idea. “Like…in a weird way?” Her lights were the only light source now, painting them both in a muted orange glow. The fireworks had ended, but she didn’t remember when that was, swallowed up entirely when he seemed to lean closer, all five lights glowing like glittering fireflies. “It’s not weird, it’s—” Screenshots of comments overlaying a picture of books. The ship bobbed gently as the sea rose when a pointed, scaly snout broke through the water. The Leviathan slowly came into view, its head shaped like an eel with long horns sprouting from its forehead. Iron-like scales covered large fins resembling sea glass tucked close to its body. It rose until Kassidy was sure it was higher than her window at the top of the apartment building, leering down at the vessel. The Leviathan growled, a low rumbling that vibrated the deck before it spoke, its voice a deep boom over the deathly silent ship. “Who dares to unsettle my waters?” No one moved. No one made a sound. All Kassidy could do was stare at the giant monster in horror. There was no way her magic could do anything about that. “Let me deal with this,” Ezra said, a dark look in his eyes as he took slow, careful steps forward toward the edge of the ship. “Leviathan,” he called out, straightening as he laid his hands on the railing. “You have something you should not have.”

The orbs danced around her as he let loose a breath. “You did it.” Kassidy examined each yellow orb of light floating around her. She did it. A small smile tried to break through, but the thought of being replaced, along with her magic, still hung in the air. “Now what?” She waved her hand close to one of the lights, feeling a slight twinge from the small amount of heat. Ezra’s voice was level once again, but there was a certain softness to his tone this time as he spoke. “I want you to remember this feeling of summoning your power. If you can harness that, you can control it in different ways.” He nodded to her. “Try changing their color.” The lights drifted around her for a moment longer as she tried to focus on them and on the warmth in her chest and the tingling in her fingertips as she tried to will the lights to different hues. She imagined it like turning an invisible dial on a gradient wheel. But the lights fizzled out just when she thought she had a hold of them.

A dimly lit room in a stone castle with a fire in the hearth. The following text is in a box over the image: He’d been doing this to her for a while; there had always been an uneasiness, a turning feeling in her stomach, from the first time he had looked at her in the King and Queen’s throne room. She remembered it fanning around her and wrapping her up like a cocoon when those charged gold eyes met hers, only for a moment but long enough for her chest to clinch at the look alone. Even now, the feeling started at her toes and burned through her like wildfire. She got the same feeling picturing his stupid, smug smirk, with the way it was always the left side of his mouth that tilted up. But if she really wanted her heart to race, it was how he had laughed on the rooftop during the fireworks, the way it started as a slow grin that spread to reveal his fangs. Kassidy paused her pacing when a different intrusive thought burrowed into her brain, again of rejection and wondering if he thought of her in this same way, if he wished she’d show up at his room right now just to ask what it meant.

Kassidy shook her head but he had already closed his eyes. “I would really prefer you didn’t, I’m pretty sure you have a concussion. You can’t go to sleep with those.” “I’m not sleeping, I’m lying down.” She scooted forward on her knees until she was kneeling closer to his head. “Then you need to talk to me to keep yourself awake.” He sighed like she was his biggest problem when she was trying to keep him alive. His eyes were still closed but he asked, “What do you want to talk about?” She shrugged. She knew concussions also caused disorientation and affected memory; she needed to make sure he was still lucid. “I don’t know. Tell me your bio. Name, birthday, star sign.” She saw the faintest grin still formed. “Riodin Hawthorne. Second day after the new year. What the fuck is a star sign?”

A dark forest with the following text over it: God, her head ached, but not from hitting it like he had; it ached with the icy fear gripping her like jagged claws that they were lost. She shivered from it. “Fine,” she said, leaving out how miraculous that on its own was. She gingerly touched her split lip again. “Just cold and wet.” Rio stepped into her path, and she almost walked right into him as something damp but warm slid over her shoulders. Kassidy stood holding a breath as he adjusted the heavy jacket over her, then turned without another word or waiting to see if she followed again. Warmth. Despite how soaked it had been, it was relatively dry now and, most importantly, offered delicious warmth. It smelled like wet leather, earthy and pungent, but another scent, like smokey sage, filled her senses, too. She adjusted and pushed her arms through the jacket. Her cheeks felt hot; the jacket must already be sparing her from the cold. “Thanks.” “Your guardian might kill me if you freeze to death,” Rio muttered over his shoulder.
