Then, standing behind Hedric and Rum, a hand on each of their shoulders, Twii began to turn them in a circle. From the door, past the open cupboards and wardrobes, past the bed, back to the door. It looked like a normal room. Like Hedric had thought at the beginning, it looked pleasant. Nice, even. All this room for just one person. The dorms were bigger, but designed for dozens of students. His own room, back home, was far, far smaller. Untidier, too, by a large degree. “I don’t see anything.” Rum shrugged, turning faster than Twii turned her. “Maybe there’s a lot less black than you would expect. Then again, Mother Mayhigh only wears black when she’s on official witch business.” “Yes. You’ve already said. Unconventional.” Twii held up a finger, catching their attention before roving it around the room. “But you’re on the right track. It’s not what you can see, but what you can’t. Where’s the witchly accoutrements? The augur bones? The flasks for philtres and potions? Where … are the innards?”

The school comes into view as my grey Escort rounded the last bend. Here lies the perfect microcosm for imprinting these societal expectations. Bells, clocks and schedules decided by people making several times a sandwich makers' yearly income rules over my body. I am to obey. I am to be a good cog. I am to produce labor as assigned without question. I will be rewarded with non monetary praise and I will be grateful for it. After years of indoctrination I will take these values and produce labor for others. They will call me a productive member of society. Eventually I will be expected to create young to carry on in my place once the natural process of aging reduces my efficiency. The cycle will repeat ad nauseum.

The vessel at the dock was unlike anything I had ever seen before. A stream of people descended from it. They were a curious lot. Skin was pale, ghostly compared to us. Light haired—nothing but shades of dried straw, light shale, fresh snow. Tall, with most of them half to a whole shaku taller than our members. Needlessly excessive garments, oversized robes with adornments that seemed to indicate a pecking order with how they decreased in design and number as they continued to pour from the vessel. But the most significant traits I would attribute to these strange men—and the more we watched them, only men—would be… Old. Miserable. The majority of them were heavily wrinkled despite the lack of the sun on their skin. Frown lines carved deep beyond what time was capable of alone. How could they be so soft and that miserable?

Fox looked around. A cheerful fire blazed in the hearth, casting a deceptively warm glow over the tasteful, dark wood furniture, rich colored fabrics, and draperies. Every object had been carefully selected to be both opulent and oppressive, designed to intimidate visitors and empower its occupant. The décor of petty tyrants. She leaned back in the chair and kicked her feet up on the carved wooden table in front of her. It looked very expensive. The guard snarled and kicked her ankles down. He had just raised a hand to strike her when a voice brought him up short. “Now, now. You should be more polite to our guest.” She recognized the voice even before she saw R’allick Cren step into her field of vision. Up close, he was every bit the smooth and polished lord of the manor, with silky black hair that tumbled to his shoulders, glossy fingernails and pale, porcelain skin. He sank into the high-backed leather chair across from her and fixed her with an appraising gaze.

Obito sighed in annoyance, as this was a much larger seal than he usually had to draw, but still explained as he kept making the proper markings. “The three right-facing tomoe represent the three spirit realms, a thick circle around them symbolizes the barrier between spirits and the living, and flames in each of the cardinal directions call upon the elements of nature.” “I didn’t think you, of all the people I’ve met, would believe in this stuff.” Obito made a noncommittal noise, but didn’t put much effort into a more intelligent response—he didn’t want to admit how much he felt the same some days. Daisuke had to stifle a cackle at the pair.

Like we weren’t—we weren’t good enough to keep her here.” Tears stung her eyes at that last sentence, and she hastily turned her head and brushed them away, embarrassed to lose control like this in front of Light. But it was such a relief to finally say what she’d been feeling for ten years, without having to worry about her father or Clara, well meaning though they might be, ordering her not to feel it. “My father’s death was... not his choice,” Light said carefully, “so I can’t feel angry at him, though I’m angry it happened. But I can completely understand why you’d feel that way.” “I know I shouldn’t,” she released a trembling sigh. “I feel terrible that I do. But I can’t help it.” “You shouldn’t feel terrible. I think it makes sense for you to feel like that.” He paused, as if unsure he should continue his thoughts. “Sometimes I question why El made us this way, marking the people who are destined for paradise. I think knowing what happens after we die can make some people far too focused on the future, and not enough on the present. It leads so often to grief and cruelty. I think we’ve all been hurt by it, one way or another.” Mem gaped at him. It was a blasphemy, to question El’s perfect design. She wanted to be offended by the statement, but... “Before she—killed herself,” she whispered, “my mother told me something. I’ve never known whether I believe it or not.” “What?”

A windy path eventually brought them back to the line of cottages. Xiuying went for the Outworld cabins, which had the exact same design as Earthrealm’s except for a purple door instead of a blue one. Apart from a colder ambient temperature, Xiuying’s room was also identical. Her backpack rested beside the bed, with the twinblade guarding over her belongings, and taking a discreet peek inside, Askaly found a change of clothes and a book whose cover she couldn’t see. “So…” she started. “What’s it like to sleep under the same roof as the big lizards?” “They don’t sleep inside.” “No? Why does Mïn bother building all this if most of his own realm’s species don’t even use it?” Xiuying removed her headphone and stowed it inside the backpack, which she then zipped closed. “It takes more mental energy to sculpt different models than similar ones. At least that’s what Ayodele said.” Askaly hummed, assuming she referred to another of the Lin Kuei warriors, but she didn’t want to pry and give the impression she was jealous or something. Which she wasn’t. That would be ridiculous.

“Here,” Molly tossed a pile of lavender silks at Wren’s head, startling her out of the past. “Your turn.” Dressing Wren took a little longer, mostly because she kept arguing with Molly about how much gap to leave at the thighs and how deep the neck should plunge. The lilac color did contrast nicely with her tanned skin, though, and the mercenary had picked a girdle with a floral design that was embellished with little teardrop shaped amethysts. It glittered and caught the light when she shook her hips. “Mol, if you ever decide to give up the sword you could make a go of styling hoity-toity bints in a boutique somewhere,” Wren turned from side to side, glancing over her shoulder in the mirror. “Ugh, Gods no.” The mercenary grimaced. “It’s fun for a lark every now and then, but I’ll take a pair of well tailored trousers and broken-in boots any day over all this frippery.” Wren couldn’t argue with that logic. She preferred pants most days herself. You almost never tripped over the hem of your trousers and the wind never blew breeches up around your knees, flashing your petticoats at everyone on the street.

First impressions can be tough, but Lucian here starts out spoiled rotten.

“Maximus!” I felt hot tears in my eyes as I threw my book across the room. I heard it slam against the wall, but I cried out for my valet again. This was an outrage. I told him I wanted to read another fairytale by Heinrich the Fourth, but he gave me this commoner drivel. Oskar Reknas was not worth an ounce of my attention. “Maximus!” I screamed and stormed out of my room. “Your Highness, please.” I saw Maximus finally approach from down the hall, with his thin frame and even thinner hair. He pursed his thin lips and scrunched his thin nose. “This was what your father could provide you on such short notice. You already own all of Heinrich the Fourth’s available titles. You have not even tried the new one.” “I will not read anything written by a peasant!” I glared at Maximus and crossed my arms. “He lacks the intelligence needed to craft a story! Tell my father to have it burned at once!”

“It’s probably nothing, never mind. Let’s just… Let’s just get there and see what we find.” While his attention was on the road, I reached down and checked the gun in my holster, making sure it was easily accessible. Things just might get more interesting than James had bargained for. We pulled into the parking lot of a small office building, and Simon parked the car. He moved to open his door, but I shook my head. “Wait just a sec.” I scanned the lot but didn’t see anything out of the ordinary. “Do me a favor? Pull up your hood,” I instructed. “Ok…” He did as he was told, adjusting his sweatshirt. “What is going on, Ray?” “Probably just me being paranoid. Let’s get inside. Keep your head down and move quickly.” We crossed the parking lot and entered the building without incident. My hand didn’t leave the gun under my jacket. Simon led the way to the elevator. “We need to go up to the fourth floor,” he said. “How about we take the stairs?” I nodded at the door to the stairwell door.

A creak of the floor in the hallway caught his attention. It seemed Mori had his fill of being nosy. He repeated the shuffle once more, the second of eight he'd do as part of his routine. One for each of them—the elements that made their world tick. A third, and yet Mori still hadn’t come in. “Sunshine, get in here already,” Bert grunted. “What, I'm not allowed to look around?” Mori held open the curtain hesitantly, partly poking into the room and jutted his thumb behind him to the room across the hall. “You've got a whole life in there I didn't know about.” “Ah, and whose fault is that?” Rather than answer, because Bert knew he wouldn't, Mori merely scowled and entered the room, taking his seat cornered to Bert's right. He continued with his fourth and fifth shuffles, ignoring the subtle but undeniably grumpy pout being shot his way, and ending the fifth as Mori seemed to notice the jar behind him. “Can they?” Mori gestured loosely to the space behind Bert. “You know they're going to whine all night once they find out you've been hiding a hoard.”

Here, Cookie starts to think she might be a lesbian (lily) after all (she used to think she was ace (lotus)). And so, while she's making a potion for the one she has a crush on, she considers adding some lily petals for ~symbolism~

Maybe… maybe she wasn’t a lotus, after all, but rather a woman-loving lily. Or a lily pad, one who likes women, neutral people with female parts, and other feminine-appearing people, regardless of their organs. Inspired by this revelation into her own life, Cookie went to the table of ingredients and found petals from a specific lily which were used in alchemy to ‘remove sorrows.’ They also smelled nice. “Sage, would adding lily petals counteract the Neutral potion?” She asked him, just to be certain. Some alchemy was an art, and one could add ingredients as they pleased to change the flavor or scent. But some alchemy was also a science, and one had to know the exact details of their ingredients if they wanted to make a safe and effective brew. “It should be fine,” he answered. “Don’t go overboard. One petal per month of dosage will suffice. And don’t let any felines drink it. Lilies are toxic to cats, Nilians, and Wynnles.” Cookie added three, but those three tiny petals looked so insignificant compared to the whole cauldron. Against her better judgment, she added a fourth. Alchemy was partially an art form, and this was her way of being creative. She couldn’t draw or play an instrument or write poetry, but she could craft a potion that would be beloved by the one she hoped to become better friends with. She dispatched of the first demon cluttering her way with a swift arc that cleaved it in half. Organs clattered to the ground, alerting the nearby otoshel. A head rolled before it could turn to her, then she raised her swords and brought them down on a third demon. The fourth otoshel raised its spear, but before it could throw it, Sareena flung her sword, hacking its legs at the knees. Standing above it, she stomped on its head. Again and again and again. It took some time, but it finally broke into viscous metal shards. Hargassorv’s tail smashed an entire line of slaves near her. The surviving demons, preferring to fight someone their size, rushed Sareena as the Archdevil’s spawn slithered towards the fortress.

“Hey guys,” she said shyly. Luna squirmed and scrambled out of her arms, darting back into the Gellars’ apartment. “Sorry about earlier. I hope I didn’t embarrass you too much.” “No big deal,” I told her. “Sorry your friends were being jerks.” “It’s just Abby. She’s like that.” She sat down. “What’re you playin’?” “Don’t Blink,” said Jon. “You have to try to get rid of your cards as quick as you can by makin’ different combinations. But you gotta be quick when you grab the cards, or you’ll miss your chance. Kazuo made it up.” Kazuo had turned red again the moment she sat down. “It’s sorta dumb,” he mumbled. “Sounds fun, actually,” said Nat. “Could I play?” I grinned at her. “Uh, sure. But just so you know, Kazuo always wins.” After we explained the rules to her, Kazuo shuffled the cards and dealt us our starting hands. It took Nat a few rounds to get the hang of it, but by the fourth round she was keeping up with us as well as if she’d been playing the game her whole life. In the fifth round, she won. Kazuo still had two cards in his hand, and was reaching for the draw pile, when she threw down her final cards. He blinked at her. “What?” “I won,” she said politely. “I think? Right?” “Holy crap,” said Jon. I chortled.

Wren couldn’t get up. She just couldn’t do it. Her arms and legs and fingers and toes had taken all the abuse they could bear and they refused to suffer one iota more. Rain pattered against her skin, carving tiny runnels through the gore that smeared her skin. At least I’ll die with a clean face. Wren laughed at the thought but her chuckle quickly turned to a gurgling cough as her open mouth caught more rainwater than she’d bargained for. She turned her head and shoulders to the side, half surprised that her body hadn’t completely betrayed her. The mutiny was evidently localized to her arms and legs. Wren lay back and tried to catalog the aches and pains and minor agonies that were playing a rousing ditty across her bones but she kept losing count and having to start over. She drifted for a bit, slipping in and out of consciousness. Each time she came to with a sudden start, half expecting a flash of steel or gnashing teeth aimed for her throat. The fourth time Wren woke, her eyes opened on an oval of white skin framed by damp black curls blotting out the sky overhead. Waterlogged and weak as a babe, paler than she’d ever seen him, Spencer still looked to Wren like an angel that had descended from the heavens to carry her to paradise. He cradled her head and shoulders in his lap, sharing what precious little warmth he had with her.

Daisuke groaned and rubbed his face when his eyes opened, pushing away the strands of damp hair sticking to his forehead. The real world steadily trickled into realization once more, dispelling the strange dream that haunted him for the fourth night in a row; other than needing to learn more about the talisman, he couldn’t glean any useful information from it. Panic suddenly surged through his body after another moment of lying awake—he should’ve been in Master Yujin’s office by now.

All it had was nothing but a ton of nonsense. Alien invaders from Jupiter? Seven feet tall, two tails, blue skin, and four purple eyes? The aliens want to replicate humans and de-terraform the planet? “De-Terraforming? Is that even a thing?” Eve asked as she continued reading through the paper. It was obvious the writer was a nutcase. She skimmed through it some more. There were more insane ramblings, but one article caught her eye.
