The entire point of social media is being able to surround yourself with people who start posts with sentences like "Hi, shipwreck autist here!"
Hi, shipwreck autist here! It was in fact true at the time. The Edmund Fitzgerald also had a sister ship, the Arthur B. Homer, which had the same structural defect the Edmund Fitzgerald did and was quietly retired shortly after Fitz sank. She remains the largest ship ever scrapped on the Great Lakes

Mamdani will force wealthy men to pay tithes to support almshouses which will shelter the destitute, and also to open their houses and give food freely to everyone in their area unable to work through age or illness or disability
Mamdani will gather a host of assemblymen and force King John to sign the Magna Carta, followed by a second round of the Oxford Provisions which will further limit the power of the Monarchy under Henry III. Will no-one think of these English Kings.
Mamdani will implement sumptuary law. Ladies will have to carefully measure how many ounces of gold are in their girdles, and wearing pearls on hats will be banned except for wives or courtesans of foreign mercenaries.

We didn’t need all these biographical Willy Wonka movies about who he is as a person. In the older versions, he’s obviously God or the Devil. You’re supposed to spend the entire story wondering which one and gradually become worried they’re the same being

pre-writing a devastating obituary for your enemy is god-tier hating of a kind you don’t often see anymore. renaissance haterism. beautiful stuff.
A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

My favourite hotel on earth (at least in Montreal). It is really a brutalist low rise motor hotel high a top of a concrete plinth. It remains gorgeous & perfect 60 years later. Heaven.

I will never forget the Toronto Blue Jays relief pitchers sharpie-ing Vesia’s number on their caps during games 6 and 7 of the World Series for as long as I live.

Just a simple act of love and solidarity and sportsmanship so desperately needed in these awful times. Class organization.
Dodgers reliever Alex Vesia and his wife Kayla announced that their newborn daughter, Sterling Sol, died on October 26th.

Please continue to keep this family in your thoughts. 💔

I hope the government issued a press release thanking Polievre for his support of their budget "since he saw no need to submit an amendment"
Meanwhile in Canada: Tory MP crosses the floor to the Liberals on budget week, citing poor Tory leadership; in response, Polievre talks too much in the House and somehow gets usurped by the Bloc in opposition:

Things a bit better but still a trans lady just trying to get by and pay off absolutely absurd amounts of dental bills while trying to raise a 1 year old and emotionally deal with a parent with alzheimer's (for transparency, not alone in caring for them)

They've lost any mantle of "reasonability" and "just asking questions" and it is going to become toxic political sludge.
I don't know if it's just me, but I've gotten the sense recently that transphobia a political tool is already played out. Not only is it not a winner, but it really feels like the right overplayed their hand with anti-trans hate and people generally seem sick of it, sick of bulling running on hate.
As many have pointed out, Mamdani didn't stand apart from our trans brothers and sisters. He didn't play the "Gee, gosh, it sure is complicated," milquetoast moderate card. And he crushed.

The way forward is together, not over the bodies of our own.

I can’t believe we’re back to medieval level conflicts like “local authorities deny catholic prisoners the Eucharist, bishop arrives, Papal sanction may follow”
Chicago Auxiliary Bishop José María Garcia-Maldonado at ICE detention facility: “Being here is an act of holiness…soon we will seek access to the facility to bring the Eucharist to our brothers and sisters; if they say no again, we will keep praying.”

I think a lot about how the Edmund Fitzgerald could still be sailing down the Detroit River to this day, if things had been different. (The laker here is around the same age)

This Monday marks 50 years since the Edmund Fitzgerald went down.
