Hi Bluesky gang! I'm Rod from Uruguay 🇺🇾
Been making games for ~15 years now. Lots of web games!

Here some of the latest stuff I've worked on.

Follow me for game dev and other shenanigans.

Se habla español!
I was talking about this with some colleagues and my observation was that we have designed things ( in general, not just games) to be so friction-less that we have out-trained ourselves to find interest in anything that can mildly annoy us or challenge us.

We have overoptimized our experiences.
Maybe it's just me but players don't seem to handle losing very well these days when rewind is just a thing at times, or when I see games like Silksong being criticized for being hard, or for Air Riders' City Trial to be unfair because you chose the wrong setup for the stadium

Why show your "Continue Watching" list first if you can autoplay the show/movie you want to push behind a semi transparent overlay so it counts as a Watch in your metrics.

Number go up, baybey!
is there a reason why every single paid streaming service UI has only gotten incredibly worse and less usable over time

2012 was a pivotal year in misinterpreting game dev related media with the 3-hit combo of the book Reality Is Broken, Indie Game the Movie and the Valve Employee Handbook.

We pretty much played out our own "don't make the Torment Nexus" meme in one fell swoop.
As annoying as a collective of yacht obsessed libertarians with the worst management structure is, it turns out that they still just hammer any publicly traded company on any practical and ethical level. 🫠

I get a lot of women's shampoo ads to "make my hair stronger".

Great job harvesting my data guys.
love to live in a world where all my personal data is relentlessly harvested so that megacorps can feed it into their all-knowing algorithms and yet somehow the end result is that algorithm going “we think you’d like Clarkson’s Farm”

True.

Alternatively, return to the old traditions of just calling it a "post" as an umbrella term for any socials.
and yes this is a tweet!!

if in casual conversation you say "I saw a tweet the other day" you don't correct yourself to say you saw a "toot" or a "skeet", bc deep down we all intuitively know the tweet is a format

While it's true you can't fully trust player opinions on balance for this reason, devs in charge of game tuning must also realize that data lies too.

Balance isnt real. Only the perception of balance is. It's all vibes. Balance isnt a viable OR desirable goal. You want fun, variety, and retention.
One of the producers on Guilty Gear Strive said it was basically impossible to source player feedback on balance changes online because nobody had original opinions and would just parrot what the most popular content creators said and so they had to rely on data and I think about that every day.

Honey wake up.
New 4 HOUR LONG deep dive Disney Park video essay just dropped.
🤩
So you made a robot stand up and talk... now what? In this over 4-hour journey, Kevin follows the promise of Disney's Living Character Initiative, an effort to populate Disney theme parks with free-roaming, interactive beings. It was touted as the future. How's it going? Watch here: bit.ly/49C6vng

Just.. man, media literacy is becoming such an important skill to teach your kids.

There's so much that can be narrowed down to "you... didn't get what just happened, did you?" in full grown ass adults.

Critical thinking + media literacy. Save the next gen cause the current one is already toast.

Following up on the trashfire interview of Roblox CEO.

BESIDES the non-existent child safety in terms of who they talk to...

CHILDREN GAMBLING is something I'm very much afraid of. Obvious gachas aside, it's actully one of my top concerns of "kids play GTA!?", much less so its violent/sex content.
me: oh god it can't get worse can it
roblox ceo: we are innovating ways to get kids addicted to gambling

Moreover, it's very hard for some folks to understand that these places are their own Third Places because we've destroyed them IRL. So, as Luke mentions in the original thread, they're inevitable at some point because it's where they ~hang out~. Playing "something else" is closing up the local mall
I'm one of the nerdy dads in our girl's school so I'm the dessignated-by-the-other-parents point person to talk about these things and "what's the deal with Roblox?"

I know I'm terminally online, but some of these folks have 0 flight hours on the web. Tricikier for parents of more tech savvy kids.

admire the intent, but as someone who said the same thing, you probably wont keep your kids off roblox, because you wont be able to. its a platform, not a game, one kid's social groups congregate in, and youll need to navigate that problem the same way you do every other tricky parenting problem

Alright! Let's actually talk about this waterfall thing. It is an amazing showcase of many things that I adore from late 90s/early 2000s graphics.
I am replicating this in Blender through mere observation, so some things might not be fully accurate to the mind-boggling effects of the PS1.

So many people are self sabotaging by deskilling via this nonsense right now. Want an edge in 2027? Don’t build reliance on bad tools into your process in 2025.
Relying on ChatGPT to teach you about a topic leaves you with shallower knowledge than Googling and reading about it, according to new research that compared what more than 10,000 people knew after using one method or the other.

Honest question for the old Hot Topic mall goth animation nerds like me:
Was Jhonen Vasquez involved at all in any part of the production of Hazbin Hotel / Helluva Boss??

Because the Invader Zim vibes I get from it every now and then scratch that very irken itch. But in red instead of purple.
