Also, there's a giveaway planned for the season finale -- an action figure of #Quakes74 captain Cristian Espinoza! Available to the first 5,000 fans in attendance. #LaMaquina
Was out at the San Jose Earthquakes training facility for today's press availability. It's now double in size (the new half is in the foreground), though the team is still waiting for the use permit to be issued in order to play on the new part. A small, but necessary, improvement.
We watched it tonight, and I'm still trying to make sense of how I feel about it. I didn't move from my seat for the entire film!
Thanks for your incredible coverage over the years, a big reason I stuck with the Athletic. Look forward to seeing what's next!

Niko Tsakiris, absolute filth to make it 2-0 to the #USMNT U-20s against Italy.

Ten minutes from the Quarterfinals. #U20WC

Gonna rage if Tsakiris doesn't get 2000+ MLS minutes next year. Be it in San Jose or elsewhere.

The Guardian announces plans to expand its global soccer coverage ahead of 2026 men’s World Cup in North America
Combination of seven new roles, including six in the US, spanning sports and business coverage, visuals, video and more

Based on this table, given that his winning percentage in 2025 is 0.424, the answer is "Yes."
One of my all-time favorite players to watch in MLS, sad to see him retire.
BREAKING: Columbus Crew midfielder and MLS legend Darlington Nagbe is retiring after the 2025 MLS season, per sources.

Nagbe, 35, is a four-time MLS Cup winner (2015, 2018, 2020, 2023) with three clubs (Portland, Atlanta, Columbus).

One of MLS's best-ever midfielders 👏
The scenarios for the Earthquakes to qualify on Decision Day will have to wait until after this weekend. Bottom line, they will need to win against Austin and have up to three other games go their way.
Following their loss at the Vancouver Whitecaps yesterday, the San Jose Earthquakes could be eliminated from MLS Cup Playoffs contention before their season finale if, this Saturday, FC Dallas win or draw at the LA Galaxy and Real Salt Lake win or draw at the Seattle Sounders.
Yeah, would be nice to see in SJ.
• Someone needs to see how big of a win the Dynamo managed by buying Jack McGlynn and putting the ball on his foot this year and say "hey we should do that with Niko Tsakiris."

Dallas, D.C., Nashville, a half-dozen other teams. Or... maybe San Jose could just play him? That'd be nice.
Eagly!!!
FIFA has confirmed Clutch, Zayu, and Maple as the mascots for the 2026 men’s World Cup, with a bald eagle, a jaguar, and a moose representing the three co-hosting nations: The United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Thanks a million to our listeners, viewers, and supporters! #RBNY
This is the part of the culture of thought that Bruce Arena identified as holding San Jose back when he first arrived. The veteran coach will need to keep chipping away at some of that risk aversion if he hopes to make the Quakes a perennial playoff qualifier.
“From what I see, we always wait to concede a goal before playing in [an aggressive] way,” captain Cristian Espinoza added. “It’s like we’re hesitating too much. When the game starts, we don’t take risks, we don’t go forward, we don’t play well. Then, when we get scored on..."
Good to see Wondo on Jonathan's list. While most fans will never forget his World Cup miss, they should take time to acknowledge his consistency as a goal scorer in MLS, including 10 straight seasons with double digit totals.
As I do every year, posting my National Soccer Hall of Fame ballot for the recent player division, where I’m a voter. 10 names in alphabetical order:

Dwayne De Rosario
Maurice Edu
Tobin Heath
Keith Johnson
Robbie Keane
Mike Lawson
Sam Mewis
Heather O’Reilly
Amy Rodriguez
Chris Wondolowski
Looks good on that old-timey player card.
Everyone, say hi to the newest member of the squad 👋

The Rowdies have acquired Paul Marie on loan from San Jose.

Haha! Clearly, I've consumed way too much soccer social media throughout the years!
"Baker Street" came up on my playlist this morning, and all I could think about were insane MLS highlights. Thank you to whoever created that association for me!

I never started The Soccer Dispatch to make money.

I started it because I was frustrated at the diminishing number of places to write interesting, non-mainstream stories about football. It was my own little way to respond to the narrowing of the football media landscape.
