This sucks. A lot.

I know from my own experience doing it— it is NOT expensive to pay humans to do this. I got invaluable development working there. As did countless others.

But hey look at that, here’s a feedback form in case you also think it sucks www.mlssoccer.com/feedback/rec...

If you're an MBA out to revolutionize a sports league, follow the Beer Line Method: go to a game and describe your idea to any five fans in line for concessions, and if they tell you it sucks major ass, buy their beer to say thanks for saving you money on AI match reports or NFT monkeys or whatever

As someone whose time freelancing for MLSsoccer was a vital step in my career progression, and someone who generally gleans insight from the observations of others:

This sucks so hard.
MLS is using generative AI to write match recaps. Writers used to get paid freelance rates to do that. Hssssss.

🇩🇪 Thomas Müller for the Vancouver Whitecaps in all comps:

7 goals
4 assists
532 mins (48 mins per goal contribution)

Since Müller's debut, Whitecaps are 10 games unbeaten (7W-3D-0L) including winning fourth-straight Canadian Championship

What. A. Signing.

Vancouver Whitecaps forward Nelson Pierre on the impact of Thomas Müller:

“Honestly, I'm not surprised at all. He's an incredible player and an incredible person. He's really brought the locker room together and he's made all the young guys feel important and part of the team."

🇦🇷 Lionel Messi now up to 26g/18a (44 goal contributions!) this season for Inter Miami

🏆 Messi is heavy favorite to become first-ever back-to-back MVP in MLS history & with one game left, has outside chance at Carlos Vela's single-season record for goal contributions (49)

Best Decision Day storyline is obviously the race for the West Wild card slots:

8. Dallas, 41 pts (at Vancouver)
9. RSL, 40 pts (at St. Louis)
10. Colorado, 40 pts (vs LAFC)
11. San Jose, 38 pts (vs Austin)

The Quakes somehow, some way, still have a path. Ridiculous.

Some personal news: today is my final day at The Athletic, ending a 6+ year tenure on its staff.

Immensely fortunate to have covered this sport alongside some of the finest writers and editors in the industry. Will keep you posted as I figure out what’s next for my work!

Did a midweek mailbag and got the room to stretch my wings a bit and think philosophically about where all the No. 10s have gone.

Sporting KC CSO David Lee:

"I've worked my entire career to have an opportunity like this.

"I'd been part of NYCFC for 12 years and it was always going to take something really special for me to leave. That's precisely what exists right here."

🇺🇸 Sources: New York Red Bulls midfielder Daniel Edelman is attracting interest from Europe and other MLS clubs.

RBNY have rejected offers in past windows as they haven't met valuation.

Edelman, 22, could be on the move this winter. He has made 117 first team apps.

What a career Darlington Nagbe has had.

After the Crew won MLS Cup in 2023 I was covering the celebrations in the locker room.

Two different champagne-soaked Crew staffers made sure to tell me:

“He’s the best fucking player this league has seen. You can fucking tweet that.”

BREAKING: Columbus Crew midfielder and MLS legend Darlington Nagbe is retiring after the 2025 MLS season, per sources.

Nagbe, 35, is a four-time MLS Cup winner (2015, 2018, 2020, 2023) with three clubs (Portland, Atlanta, Columbus).

One of MLS's best-ever midfielders 👏

Sources: A rumor that LAFC and Tata Martino have verbally agreed to terms is premature.

I'm told no decision made by LAFC with any candidates and not particularly close yet.

Tata Martino likely in mix of names, and would definitely be interested if offered, but nothing close.

The Philadelphia Union bring Holden Trent's jersey along for the celebration.

Trent tragically passed away last October.

Class ❤️

Looks like a no comment from Bradley Carnell about being let go by St. Louis last year....

The Philadelphia Union have routinely been among the best teams in MLS with some of the lowest first team payrolls each year.

Building a roster to compete once that way is hard enough. Overturning the roster several times to do it again and again? It's special.

🛡️ THE PHILADELPHIA UNION HAVE WON THE 2025 MLS SUPPORTERS SHIELD!

🏆 Union win second-ever trophy (2020 Shield)

📈 Philly were nowhere near anyone's Shield favorites in preseason. In fact, were widely picked to miss playoffs

Union not just make playoffs... but win Shield 👏

Hey all! Quick update: I’ve moved on from GIVEMESPORT.

I am so thankful for and happy about my time there. Was so fun helping build an MLS vertical from scratch with an incredibly committed team.

Will have more news for my writing in the future, but all love between GMS & I! 💪🏼
