It is mind boggling and imagine now if we also cleaned the indoor air, especially in health care environment, what that chart could look like.
Currently dorking out over this graph about child mortality with my brother. Just mind boggling to take in.

It really is astonishing and that it’s so recent and so fast
For most of human history half of babies born died before they were five. And then we collectively worked out how to stop that.
Currently dorking out over this graph about child mortality with my brother. Just mind boggling to take in.

there’s a scene in the new documentary where Elizabeth Taylor is talking about the stigma of AIDS and how she got involved in the movement and it’s fucking everything

Anyone know?

Your annual reminder that the most revealing difference between Irish and Scottish Gaelic is definitely in the words for December: Mí na Nollag (Month of Christmas) in Ireland, and An Dubhlachd (the Blackness) in Scotland. So once again may I wish you all a lovely Blackness.

What matters is that we don't sit by. The Midwestern grandmas, the required chemists, the broadcast journalists who joined ACTUP, knew AIDS was everyone's issue. So is ICE. So is genocide. So are trans lives. World AIDS Day always reminds me for the love of G*d just pick something and ACT UP.

ALL you have to do is just not use it, tell these companies you aren't using it, and make fun of people who do. We need a mass collective effort to make genAI extremely uncool, lame, embarrassing, cringe. Everyone needs to react to it with a MOUNTAIN of hostility until they run out of steam.

Increasingly I agree
Sure, they've made an environmentally catastrophic mass hallucination disinformation plagiarism Clippy that will destabilize the world, but also their other goal is to replace human workers entirely and let us humans starve. A boycott of AI is the most important boycott of your entire life.
"All of this falls apart if humans don't adopt the tech. This is why you've seen Meta cram its lame chatbots into WhatsApp and Instagram. This is why Notepad and Paint now have useless Copilot buttons on Windows. This is why Google Gemini wants to "help you" read and reply to your emails."

Just a heads up with all the Christmas markets and fairs on at the moment - if you see art or art-based pieces for sale, ask who the artist is, because the amount of people deceptively slapping "made locally" on pieces locally farted out by their computer and a genAI prompt is getting depressing

The Boy has expressed an interest in learning about the Roman Empire. I mistakenly mentioned this to The Grandmother.

Help! Anyone got recommendations for non-fiction Roman books and/or building sets for a 13 year old?

Paywalled but here are the paintings. very moving.
Colin Davidson is a remarkable painter and a remarkably humble human being. A man sought out by world leaders & rock stars, who was hired by Brad Pitt to teach him how to paint, spent a year making 18 portraits of Troubles victims for free. They are a silent rebuke to our government and our society.
This artwork is a silent rebuke for all of us… too scared or insensitive to recognise NI’s often ignored victims
When future generations consider the period in which we exist, there will be an issue which some will find bewildering.

Yes! Expert systems have their uses, but we've run a test, now, of ChatGPTness in the wild, and it was a disaster. Not a single good has come out of it, save that people who don't care if work is good or bad can now produce crappy work while they attend to their crypto accounts.

And I don't know if the answer is: everyone is too traumatized to do work and we need to reinvent society. Or if it's more like: generations are losing their cognitive abilities and willpower due to destructive technologies. Or: we all have post-viral brain damage. Or: all of the above.
