A Baptist lady named Ada ran a convalesce out of the house next to my grandparents, taking in poor, sick people who went to her church. She also helped raise my mom and her 15 siblings. Her recipes are always made to have some to give away. This is an ancient, very humble coffee cake.

A very grey day, the sky heavy with the threat of rain. This grapefruit sized paper wasp nest has somehow survived the past 2 storms.

Peak fall foliage in Oklahoma's Ouachita mountains. Yes, this is Oklahoma! #photography

What is already one of the most beautiful parts of the state absolutely comes alive in the fall. I've been wanting this shot for years, but I either couldn't get there during peak or there were active droughts.

“By the lake or river-side
Where the Alders dwell,
In the Autumn may be spied
Baby catkins; cones beside -
Old and new as well.
Seasons come and seasons go;
That's the tale they tell!”

The rugged Canadian Shield is a place where you walk on rocks that are billions of years old. The area I live in has more lakes than people.

Lonely tree in late autumn, beautiful, melancholic and a little bit spooky in the pale light of the setting sun. #ThickTrunkTuesday #Spooktober
