I can't believe it, but I got a last minute permit to visit The Wave in Arizona. It's a 3.2 mile one way hike from a sketchy dirt road in Utah and it was totally worth it!

Male Downy Woodpecker had attempted several times to feed his offspring with this oversized grub. He had to resort to beating it against the tree to make it a more manageable thickness....ugh.
The head of a young woodpecker is just visible in a hole of a tree. On the side of the tree, a male Downy holds a very thick grub in it's beak.
