Russia has always been set up so that everything flows to Moscow. St. Petersburg only gets a taste because it's the backup capital & they can't let it slide too much, but every other part Russia controls exists only to feed Moscow. Order something made in the Far East & it comes to you via Moscow.

No, you genuinely have no idea how wide this gulf is. Even with, say, Louis XIV's France.

The resistance put up by local aristocratic parlements to Louis' decrees would have been unthinkable in Russia at nearly any time under the Tsars (brief, swiftly crushed exceptions aside).
Russia starting out as a hypercentralized, absolutist state that could withstand the Khanate *does* have a lot to do with its continuation as, well, a hypercentralized, absolutist state, but our other states were typically also centralized and absolutist prior to the 19th century

British state logic;
One activist lost their shit and hit a police officer with a hammer, so that justifies declaring the entire organisation terrorists, suspending their legal rights and arresting over 2000 people for holding signs.
See? Logic.

Can we all just agree to not talk about Your Party? It's not something that is or ever will be relevant to UK politics, whatever lessons we could draw about how to not run a political movement we should already know and every post just confers legitimacy they don't have.

There is something unbearably painful in the realization that this is the insurpassable distillation of all current political analysis of the present historical situation.

Ukraine has once again proved its seriousness in the fight against corruption — after the country's independent NABU and SAPO conducted searches in Yermak's place, he is out now.

A country must be judged not by the problems it faces, but by the response and actions.

This book is genuinely one of the best pieces of war journalism produced in my lifetime

One of the vanishingly few modern cases of a journalist who really, truly did care about the work and did so for a righteous cause

A chapter in Hegseth’s book is literally titled “More Lethality, Less Lawyers.”

Feel like democratic socialists need to get back to that constitutional agitation thing that they were doing from 2017 to 2019 which demands to abolish the electoral college, abolish the senate, and so on. Aziz Rana's scholarship on this country's legal mechanisms should be required reading.

Tell your lawmakers to oppose the Kids Online Safety Act- there are better ways to protect kids online without throwing other vulnerable people under the bus.
