Talk like Sam Spade, live like Miss Marple. Real life: Buenos Aires. Fiction: debut novel THE SHAMSHINE BLIND (scifi noir alternate history!) from Atria Books: https://bookshop.org/p/books/the-shamshine-blind-a-novel-paz-pardo/80bf4e7d932a98a6

My book THE SHAMSHINE BLIND was a Library Journal Top 10 SFF 2023, if you'd like a distraction this week in which folks doing the good work* capsize a conspiracy to turn the US into a theocratic dictatorship this sci-fi/noir/alt-history might be for you

my kindle keeps trying to sell me a book called GALLANTRY IN ACTION by one John J. Spearman with a vaguely phallic spaceship on the cover and I really wonder what about my half-Robin-Mckinley-half-sapphic-sff reading habits made the algorithm decide I am the target audience for this ad

Something like convergent evolution happening as humanities professors respond to ai with a similar set of practices that we each hunkered down and came up with out of desperation over the summer of 2025.
A fantastic piece that gets into the details of what a great Humanities classroom looks like. I love the focus on what to do versus what not to do—and why.

🧍Non-AI summary: it’s human and paper-based.

The reason I didn't get a video baby monitor is because a friend had one and, at one point, looked at it and panicked because the baby it was showing WASN'T HERS. The signal was getting crossed with one of her neighbors' monitors. I learned a lot about the security of those devices from that story!
HINSON: As a mom, I think about watching a baby monitor. That's a very intimate moment with your baby and to think the Chinese could be spying on your morning routine

BARTIROMO: Why are they spying on moms?

HINSON: They just want to know what Americans are up to to undermine our way of life

"are the Fae open source" TURNS OUT THAT WAS AN IMPORTANT QUESTION, NOW DOESN'T IT
So... spells.

We're using spells to undo the work we've done... tricking rocks into thinking with lightning.

And trapping evil cars in circles of salt.

The old ways are new again.
Looks like LLMs are *very* vulnerable to attack via poetic allusion: "curated poetic prompts yielded high attack-success rates (ASR), with some providers exceeding 90% ..."

My most woke opinion is that the whole point of society is to collectively help each other. My taxes should be going towards housing and feeding everyone. No one should be without food or shelter. Rich people should be contributing more towards this. It shouldn't even be controversial!

I mean the thing that Summers resigned over is directly admitting that he was pressuring students into sex (while making racist little jibes about her!) in an email to his notorious paedophile buddy. I do wonder how one could not be incredibly embarrassed to run this kind of pedantry in this case.

Reconciliation without reparation is one of supremacy's greatest sabotages of the act of repair. Whenever abuse is exposed, it offers free exoneration to the abuser at the expense of the abused, and calls it redemption. It's the traditional and popular response to abuse in our supremacist society.
Leaders of a Minnesota church community didn’t report a parishioner they knew had sexually abused girls for year.

They told his victims that once sins were “washed away in the blood of reconciliation,” they could never speak of them again.

Truly chilling, from @jlussenhop.bsky.social & Andy Mannix

People have largely tried to act like ICE/CBP failed and retreated from LA and that is completely untrue. If it weren’t for the relentless coverage of places like @lataco.bsky.social these stories would be completely under the radar.
ICE has been raiding my neighborhood and surrounding ones for the last couple of weeks now. They commandeered my local church (against the pastor's will) for a staging site and raided supermarkets, parks, Goodwills, bus stops, you name it.

The national media's been silent. So has @mayor.lacity.gov.
