My parents' generation was super racist, but they took pains to hide it from us. So a lot of young conservatives in the 90s and early aughts were earnest small government and/or evangelical types.

As I said, the overt racists and radicals had to form their own orgs.

one of my favorite stories is when we went on a cruise for mom’s 60th and my brother and i stayed up on the deck all night and watched the drunkest dude we’d ever seen (so far) get arrested and yell “why? i’m not driving the boat!” and i say that so often

it’s like $20 for three years of texas monthly and a dollar to access local stuff for a year. not prohibitive to the vast majority and still accessible by other means for those who can’t afford the cost. most of the people complaining are just complaining because they want to.
