The Night of Fallen Gods

To integrate a sect of worshippers of the “One True God” further into society, the First Daughter of the Alliance must travel to their Holy City, which no outsider has set foot in for two hundred years.

A map of the Alliance of the Nine from The Night of Fallen Gods Imagine you live in a world where war does not exist, and war knocks on your door. For thousands of years the Alliance of the Nine has stood without conflict. All of its peoples, be they Dragon, Elf, Dwarf, Wyldkin, or Human, are able to live the lives they desire with their needs met. None are considered greater than another, and no path in life is considered beneath respect. Until 200 years ago, when another wave of Humans suddenly arrive in this world from another. These people bring with them their One True God, their Savior, along with a fear and rejection of the peoples of the Alliance, their Gods, and all that they stand for. After a city is built for them, they lock the gates and send out only a few of their number every seven years to convert any they can to their ways. Now the Sovereign of the Alliance, in a bid to draw these Faithful into greater society, has finally managed to secure their participation in the All Gods Festival. In exchange however he must send his only daughter as an envoy to the Faithful’s Holy City. And so Roderika, First Daughter of the Alliance, will travel with her childhood friend Arlo in the company of a Sister of the Church to Megiddo, Bastion of the Faithful. Her partner Tala and magic tutor Henet remain behind in the Alliance Capital, suspicious of the Faithful's sudden cooperation and determined to learn more. But all is not as it seems. Hidden machinations march the world ever closer to an event that will shatter a millennia old peace. Towards… The Night of Fallen Gods.

Mortal practitioners of Magic, whether by enhancing themselves, wielding spirits' natures, or shaping mana in ways that warped reality, could contend with even the forces of nature if they honed their craft enough. But all of them together were a candle flame before the sun that was the God of Magic. The very embodiment of a fundamental force of existence called, and the world answered. Melic was only able to feel what Thel did through his brother, the actual workings too dazzlingly complex for him to follow. First Thel seized every available strand and particle of wild mana from the edge of the Outer City to the height of the Ninth Ring and spun them into uncountable weavings that blanketed every street and building. Enchantments laid to protect buildings and lives that had fallen into disrepair were forced into working order, and those that had already activated throughout the city were pushed past their limits. The weaves aligned themselves with the materials each building was constructed from and bolstered them against the fires springing up throughout the City. Simultaneously spirits were caught up in and pulled along by the nets of pure mana. Most important to move were the fire spirits, who were removed from their blazes and brought into the sky and away from the City. The fires remained behind, but would be easier to put out without the spirits driving them. Next were water spirits, which likewise pulled along threads of mana that fed them as they followed their path, converting the mana pushed through them into physical water. Thel marshaled them together with air spirits to begin forming localized storms over where the fires were the worst. Time began to inch forward again as The's spells took shape. Still he worked, focusing now on where his nets of spells met mortal flesh. Magic affecting the mind was outlawed throughout the Alliance because of its potential for misuse and the damage it could inflict on the people it was used on. Even with his fine touch… Most difficult were the Faithful acting throughout the City. Whatever they had done to hide themselves from Melic and the others, it only fell away when they acted against some part of the City or its citizens. Those who had already done so were easy enough to find, and Thel wove spells of containment around them or channeled earth spirits to bind their feet where they stood. The rest would be trickier... No! Ines cried out, seizing back some of her power and Thel's spells along with it. The fire spirits being held above the city crackled and sparked as her rage began to fuel them. These things do not deserve to be captured alive. What they have taken from us, they pay for with their lives! Time fully began again and Ines wove the fire spirits she took from Thel with wind spirits from higher above the city than the ones he had used to create the rainstorms now smothering the fires below. Ines plunged her spirits into the clouds, charging them further with the water spirits and sending their new power along the threads of the spells binding the Faithful in place. All at once many hundreds of lightning strikes fell, each one incinerating their target where they stood. None of them tried to stop Ines, though Melic could feel ripples of unease wafting through the minds of the others. Thel continued to work his spells, mostly focusing on keeping people out of harm's way, while Ines struck down each new Faithful they became aware of.

In book 1, Mary just desperately wants to go back to her convent and be left alone.

Nothing she could ever do would get her this goal.

Realizing this is a pivotal moment in her arc.

She gets better goals in future books.

I have one being that think might qualify.

It is an amalgam of the leftover concepts of a banished God, so is also itself a God, but looks down on the other divinities for binding themselves with names and forms.

It’s not a bad or good guy, very on its own side.

I have one being that think might qualify.

It is an amalgam of the leftover concepts of a banished God, so is also itself a God, but looks down on the other divinities for binding themselves with names and forms.

It’s not a bad or good guy, very on its own side.

The closest I can get is Roderika and Arlo’s friendly rivalry
They learned from the same weapons master, and while they would both say that Arlo is the better fighter, their teacher chose Roderika to succeed him and inherit his sword.
Neither know why, and it doesn’t *seem* to bother them #Writingq
