New blog post up. It's about a few things—chiefly, the impulse to jettison literary criticism as if it were ballast. www.arcadence.com/abundance-re...
Abundance Reigns!
The Reminder is a watchword: though it may ascribe a problem to us, the offenders are assuredly others.

If I happen to have any mutuals in the NY/NJ area that are in the market for a cat (or 6), we have some 2 year old children of our barn cats that we need to find homes for, as we're moving and won't have room for them. They're indoor-raised, all female, and all sweethearts who get along.

watched Glass Onion, attributing anything good said about that movie to pandemic era derangement. It's truly fucking terrible

WNYC/NPR had like two consecutive segments this morning that were like "here's a money-saving tip: soup both sates appetite *and* hydrates!"
Chat, is it a good sign when the Atlantic's Thanksgiving take is "cabbage is affordable"?
Cabbage is affordable, delicious, and astoundingly versatile, @giladedelman.bsky.social writes. The underrated crucifer “is fit for a king”:

Just a brutal time to have a functioning memory, historically.

people are reading "catch-and-kill" in the journalistic sense but she was probably just finding raccoons for him to eat

I don't know if it's artistic direction or what the actor's bringing to the table but I just don't understand why her character always looks like a censorious local functionary and not, y'know, the fun "popular" one

I do approve of Area 51 and I hope that when Harper is healthy it gets upgraded to the San Antonio Containment Zone or

alternately,

The Southern Reach
Area 51 for him and Castle is sick tho.

I just realized "Slendermonsieur" has been sitting right there??
deeply disappointing that we seem to be coalescing around "the alien" as wemby's nickname. way too staid a name for so remarkable an athlete.

dude should have a nickname that sounds like it should be a gun in Destiny 2 or something

contractually forbidden from considering this question until we get to GJA deliberations but I am actively interested in what other folks think here

one of those things where I'm not sure what the journalistic merit is supposed to be in asking a separate person if the president really believes the thing he said he believes

like, the truth of the matter has been established—asking if it's true after the fact is actually spin, anti-journalistic

need to finally write my post about how I think this is A) Not actually A Thing and B) the popular belief that it Is A Thing is actually evidence of an orthodoxy that isn't fully capable of recognizing many modes ordinary criticism when it sees it, and thus pathologizes said ordinary criticism
One thing that's never made sense to me is how much games criticism is "this thing isn't the thing I want it to be/the thing I made up in my head, so it's bad," which is not only bad criticism but a remarkably poor way to engage with any art.

Go in with an open mind and you'll be more fulfilled.

Trump just said one of the most outrageous things a modern president has ever said, and he'll probably manage to top it somehow before the week is over.
Trump suggests Khashoggi had it coming: "You're mentioning someone that was extremely controversial. A lot of people didn't like that gentleman that you're talking about. Whether you like him or didn't like him, things happen. But he knew nothing about it. You don't have to embarrass our guest."

if I had to wager, I imagine she highlights broad sections and then just writes extremely open-ended comment-questions using words she doesn't fully understand but believes make her sound sagacious, a-la "I'm now wondering, what if this whole thing could be more gnomic??"
What is Olivia Nuzzi like as an editor? "Too clear. Make longer. Metaphor not tortured enough."
