Like most empires, the tech empire is built using spectacular amounts of work done by unpaid workers, or slaves.

Making money by not paying your workers / suppliers is an old grift, and not as clever as it looks. Certainly not worth admiring anyone who has succeeded using this one weird old trick.

It's a pretty good reflection of the persistent (though weakening) idea that developers need publishers, and that if publishers would just be transparent about what they need then everyone would get a nice, fat deal and live happily ever after.
