That said I am lifting up the Senators who I KNOW fought, like my own @vanhollen.senate.gov. We need to press those Senators to demand a different kind of leadership internally. There’s still a lot more work ahead and we need the leadership to be chastened.
I have come to believe this as well. The list is too strange. I don’t think a majority wanted to cave, but many more than the 8.
I think that these 8 Senators are falling on the sword for Schumer and other Senators who wanted the shutdown to end. This allows the majority of Senators to save face; and only retiring or not up for reelection Senators take the heat.

It’s a ruse.

My entire life Republicans’ game has been to stymy, undercut & undermine when Democrats have power so they can point to the resulting failings as evidence progressive policies are dysfunctional & then they get power & aggressively gut every social gain & Dems are still like ‘maybe we can negotiate’

Hey, a lot of people are talking about changing affiliation from Democratic to Independent.

Let me tell you why you shouldn’t do that in Colorado.

One of the main ways to get a primary challenge candidate on a ballot is to caucus for your party. You need to be registered as a Dem to caucus.

This seems like a pretty reasonable take on the matter.

In addition to all the other benefits of getting new Democratic blood in the Senate through primaries, we would be replacing an outdated institutional memory in which Republicans are colleagues whose promises can be trusted. (Though Shaheen arrived in 2009, so I am not sure what her excuse is.)
Shaheen: "We've heard from a number of our colleagues on the other side of the aisle that they're willing to come to the table, they're willing to work with us once the govt is open to get this done. We've heard the same thing from the White House. So now we'll see if they're really gonna work w/us"

"But there is no way to defend this. And you are right to be angry about it."

I know people think the entire caucus is performing kayfabe (many of them are), but either Murphy is an Oscar-worthy actor (he could be!), or he is not in step with much of the caucus (which is the right place to be). 1/x
I got back to my office after the vote last night and recorded this. There's no way to sugarcoat what happened. And my fear is that Trump gets stronger, not weaker, because of this acquiescence. I'm angry - like you. But I choose to keep fighting.

Normally a keyhole limpet would be a trip highlight, but I forgot about the poor thing because I was obsessively hunting Lomis (see below)
@franzanth.bsky.social however should have made the PRIMARY option for #InsertAnInvert2024 false crabs into the hairy stone crab, Lomis hirta!

MY FAVORITE CRAB!!!!!!

This species is its own false crab carcinization! Not porcelain, not king, just crab again 🦀🧪🦑😍

Begging people to understand that the answer is not to give up and stop voting, it's to vote whenever possible for people like Kat Abughazaleh, who has repeatedly demonstrated that she actually gives a fuck.
This deal to reopen the government is fucking disgraceful.

Tens of millions will lose their healthcare. Trump will be emboldened.

This is exactly what’s wrong with Democratic Party leadership and why we need more people in Congress who will actually hold the line.

Hearing from more people after this went out.

"We're all pissed. This was a lot of unnecessary stress on people and their families for nothing. And if I win the lottery tonight I absolutely will spend millions to hire people to follow these 8 Dems around for a year and make their lives miserable."
I heard from a bunch of federal employees last night and this morning. They aren't happy.

"I would rather be an actual pawn. At least pawn sacrifices are calculated and achieve something. All this for a fucking meaningless vote."
