is your life too peaceful? do you want to suffer more? in 2024 i came up with a yearlong art prompt featuring arguably the most diverse list of animal species out there
insertaninvert2024.carrd.co

just look at the testimony below:
Oops this is only number 39, not 40. 🙃 I'm pleased I've made it this far but tbh I will be happy when I'm done 😂

Not my favorite (I swear insects are the hardest inverts to draw) but HOW AMAZING are these guys' eyes? Look up male mayflies of the Baeditae family.

one of my fave #insertaninvert2024 drawings I did but I don't remember what invertebrate this is, so I'm just haunted as fuck by this creature. heeeeeelp.

This cockeye squid wishes everyone on the streets a day of safety and ferocious community. #InsertanInvert2024 in 2025

Fuck Bruce Harrell. Anyway, here's a clam! #InsertAnInvert2024 in 2025

Second set of deep sea weirdos/cutie pops for #InsertAnInvert2024 in 2025! These are both hella cool Holothurians (sea cucumbers).

Drew two deep sea creatures today for #InsertAnInvert2024 in 2025, both surreal, stalked carnivores.

Decided to attempt a gummy squirrel for this week's #InsertAnInvert2024. I do like an upsetting thing.

These can cling to asteroids for a long time and when a vessel comes by, they can plunder, they go into active mode again.

March is here, meaning it's officially "SHELLS" month for #InsertAnInvert2024!

Our expert of the month is @spissatella.bsky.social, so ask away if you have shelly questions.

If you're new here, here's what the hashtag is about: insertaninvert2024.carrd.co
Here's the latest, updated list of prompts for #InsertAnInvert2024

What's changed:
- Carcinization and Wormification months are swapped

As always, feel free to interpret the themes as you wish! If you don't vibe with these, we have more suggestions in the spreadsheet: insertaninvert2024.carrd.co

For #WorldJellyfishDay and the first prompt, dangerous, for Blobfest month of #InsertAnInvert2024 it’s a smack of jellyfish! 🧪🐡🪼

The collective noun for a group of jellyfish is a "smack". This amuses me, because I imagine them smacking their tentacles together in some sort of deepsea high five.🧵

I'm still working on it. But I might be able to try printing something tomorrow.

So anyways, that's why I'm late with my InsertAnInvert2024 this month. (Totally NOT because I can't actually decide which worm to make.)

Parasitic copepods never cease to amaze! This is Pseudoblias lyrifera (Chondracanthidae). About 3mm long, they live in the mouth of fish. I love the little legs that are reduced to oven mitts (right image). The tiny comma-shaped thing at the bottom end is an attached male 🧪

Initial model for March's #InsertAnInvert2024, Diacria trispinosa (a sea butterfly). The plan is to print the body in transparent, and have solid colored "organs". I have no idea if this will work; I'm leaping off the creative cliff and hoping for more jello than sharp rocks at the bottom.

Last #insertaninvert2024 of September: the 'Headless Chicken Monster', a swimming sea-cucumber, here used as a vantage point from which to harpoon... probably something even weirder.

I love a wormy worm.

Wormification - Long, limbless

Nemerteans are a rather obscure group of mostly carnivorous marine worms.

True to their common name, ribbon worms, they're often very slim and unnecessarily long, making them some of the wormiest looking worms in a sea of worms. 🎨 🐡

This is great to resurface for #InsertAnInvert2024! In case anyone is wondering what are some of the false crabs, and how the hell do they work 🦀🧪
I turned @elksneedle.bsky.social 's explanation & analogy for carcinisation into an info poster :)

The first #InsertAnInvert2024 species of the week is the symmetrical hermit crab, Pylocheles mortensenii, which burrows itself into literal rocks instead of finding a snail shell 😱. There aren't a lot of pics/videos online, but this Japanese website has some good ones:

I am interpreting the prompts quite loosely but I thought I would share this print for #InsertAnInvert2024 as ground-nest bees who live near us. 🧪🐡🌿 My print shows blossoming cherry branches & 2 of our wild, native bees: a bumblebee (Bombus impatiens) & Blue Orchard Mason Bee (Osmia lignaria). 🧵1

LOL I just noticed how I transposed the years in the hashtag of this post. Ignore me, just quote-posting with the correct tag so I can find it later 😂

Excuse me, can I offer you a therapy (false) crab?

I LOVE this and am putting it on the crab feed 🦀 and #InsertAnInvert2024 (this month is carcinization)

Don't sleep on the crab database as a source for
#InsertAnInvert2024!

They don't have EXACTLY the 3 suggested species, but:
Lomis hirta by Michael Marmach
Patagurus rex (another weird hermit) by Arthur Anker
Lauriea punctata (same genus) by Arthur Anker

Argulus foliaceus is starring in this week's #InsertAnInvert2024 - if you're a freshwater fish, you won't want this crusty on your back. Previously classified as a type of copepod, it was later recognised that they belong to their own group called the Branchiura.
