I know ridiculously obscure details about film. Some people seem to think it’s a legitimate talent. One day, maybe it will earn me a living.

Indiana University fires IDS
adviser amid push to control
student newspaper's content The director of student media at Indiana University was fired amidst a dispute between university leadership and editors at the Indiana Daily Student over what content gets printed in the student newspaper.

As director of student media, Jim Rodenbush did not directly oversee or have any say over the content published in the IDS, per a charter between the IDS and the university. But he told IndyStar his firing follows a series of meetings with IU Media School leadership in which it grew increasingly apparent they were expecting him to officially prohibit students from publishing news.

Just got home. Showed my college students McQueen’s LOVERS ROCK tonight. First time seeing it since SINNERS and there’s some overlap. One of my bright students brought that up.

I am not familiar with this show, beyond this clip. This response, “That is such bullshit,” I would love to see more of this when pols are interviewed. Respect to the person doing this interview. Pinning them down, making them stay on subject, not accepting mischaracterization as nuance, we need it.

Wait, really? I'm honestly super shocked. Bass and supervisors have talked a lot of hot air on this topic, including defending LAPD amidst the ask of feds leaving us alone. But if we're looking countywide, yeah. The effects are undeniable.

To be clear:

LA County has declared a state of emergency BECAUSE OF the federal government.

The Feds, LA County is (correctly) saying, have CAUSED the emergency.

This is a striking political moment of internal collapse. Local govts feeling compelled to protect their ppl from … their own govt.

Not that anybody comes to me for Maine politics, but the fact that the Democrats successfully convinced a 77yo Governor to primary the 41yo progressive, is today's example of why the Democrats fucking stay failing.

One of the best critics covering the horror genre, award-winning Australian writer Alexandra Heller-Nicholas showed love to the countless women who’ve made their marks on scary cinema, whether they’ve been publicly celebrated or unfairly overlooked, with her excellent 2020 book 1000 WOMEN IN HORROR, 1985–2018. Using that book as an inspiration, filmmaker Donna Davies has assembled a surplus of film clips and an extensive list of notable interviewees—including Akela Cooper, Kate Siegel, Nikyatu Jusu, Mary Harron and Lin Shaye—to chronicle the female gender’s longstanding history of tapping into themes both universal and specifically feminine to create some of horror’s greatest achievements. —Matt Barone

it's the old russian joke
dmwoodruff.bsky.social
A very old Soviet joke, from an especially dark time:

Foxes are fleeing the USSR in droves.
Q: Why are you running away?
Fox: The Soviets passed a new law that they’re going to arrest all camels.
Q: But you’re foxes!
Fox: Yeah, why don’t *you* try proving to the NKVD that you’re not a camel.

If you accept that non-citizens have no right to due process, you are accepting that citizens have no right to due process. All the government has to do is claim that you are not a citizen; without due process you have no chance to prove the contrary.
