I found this piece sad too, but mostly because it is part of a years-long effort by progressives to understand what "really" animates Trump voters.

We already know! It is racism, misogyny and misinformation. I know that sounds condescending or whatever but it's simply what all evidence suggests.

My guess is that conservatism had devolved for years into perpetual false victimhood where they tried to convince themselves white Christians were under attack, covid lockdowns gave them a whiff of what oppression might be and it activated their insatiable death drive to get revenge for that.

Once again, the main day of Tea Party protests had about 300,000 nationwide, but saw endless coverage.

The No Kings protests had about 7,000,000 nationwide, and many media outlets reacted with a yawn.

No Kings was nearly 25x as big as the Tea Party but the Tea Party got 25x the attention.

When it came out in 2020 it was massively fatal and a huge danger and was fucking up lots of people of all ages. Hospitals were overflowing and nurses I know got traumatized from how bad it was for them.

That it's under control mostly now doesn't mean it was nothing in 2020, dipshit.
