as i wrote this i came to realize that messy online polycules aren't so much a new thing as americans returning to tradition of their forebears
you couldn't walk half a mile in 19th century america without running into a free love protestant kibbutz that was going to collapse in five years. we loved those things back then

Yup. Epcot was supposed to be a new type of community. Residents would have been required to work, with no private property ownership and no voting rights, in a utopian, autocratic company town model that would be run by the Disney company.
