I saw so many "AI" panels listed for PLA next year which read as just completely tone deaf to me. So much of the culture of AI is directly in opposition to the mission of libraries, not to mention the many many other issues every AI company and model has.

🪐📚💙 Really enjoyed Lives of Bitter Rain, an excellent character study that does a lot to flesh out one of my favorite characters from Days of Shattered Faith and the world of the Tyrant Philosophers.

Adrian Tchaikovsky's Tyrant Philosophers series has been one of my favorite new fantasy series over the last few years. These novels are wonderfully written, with an intriguing and extremely well crafted magepunk world. Lives of Bitter Rain follows Sage-Invigilator Angilly, one of the focus characters of Days of Shattered Faith, through her career and the path that takes her to Usmai.

It was 1997. You were just a kid; in over your head, caught up in events beyond your control. You trained so hard to make the school basketball team - and against all odds, you made it to the final! It felt like your entire life was leading up to this moment. Things might not have been great at home since your parents split up - and you’d been struggling with classes, sure - but here, on the court, with your team-mates, things made sense. And then that fucking dog arrived. The referee let the opposition have it on their team. Like it was a human boy. (It was wearing shoes.) You and your friends laughed at it, of course, because you didn’t know - but that morning, before the dog got involved, was as good as your life was ever going to get. You never made it to the college leagues, like you’d planned; shit, you’ve not been able to hold down any job for more than a few months. Every partner you’ve ever had left you. Your mother can barely look you in the eye. That dog was the best basketball player that the Washington Under-14’s State Championship had ever seen. And now, thirty years later, on the day of your second wedding, it’s come back to ruin your life again. HEARTS - Obsession: Emotions The dog dunked on you. Your encounter left you humbled and introspective; perhaps manipulative. SECRET: You have always hated every other player character. DOOM: You realise, with shame, that you are in love with the dog. CLUBS - Obsession: Toughness The dog headbutted you in the testicles and the referee did nothing. You are determined to never be hurt again. SECRET: You have killed a man. In my experience there are three kinds of fantasy magic novels:

The color of confetti inside your balloon will reveal which kind of power you have." I felt the panic rising in me. What if my confetti turned yellow, indicating that I was a Tiger-Talker? My family, a long line of proud Tornado-Fingers, would disown me. Could I ever return home, bearing such shame? I tried to calm myself as I readied the ceremonial safety pin. Green, I thought, willing my hopes into reality. Please be green. I popped the balloon, involuntarily shutting my eyes. When I opened them, would I see the green I hoped for? The yellow I feared? What if, gods forbid, the confetti were blue? I opened my eyes, seeing shock on the faces of my classmates. Wizzler himself stared at me, wide-eye. Looking down, I saw myself covered in confetti... purple confetti. “I don’t understand,” I growled, my body trembling with pain. “I combined eighty percent Earth-elemental mana with twenty percent Fire-elemental mana (Type B), focused through a twenty-four-sided icositetragon made of yellow topaz. This, in conjunction with my blood type, star sign, sense of humor, and nickname, should have produced a blazing column of lightning to vaporize my enemies. Instead, it made a big bubble that smells like fresh laundry. Why?” Skullgrumbler began to laugh. “You fool! You don’t even realize…” he squealed. “You’re facing east!” “It’s whatever you want,” explained Magemaster Grampledog. “Magic is just whatever you want.” I knew he was speaking in riddles, but I couldn’t grasp his hidden meaning. “So the rules are…” Grampledog lit a sliver of smokereed. “No rules. You say some words and you wave a stick and whatever you want just happens. You don’t even need the stick.” His wisdom still eluded me. I stared into his face, trying to decipher what he was really saying. “No, listen.” Grampledog snapped his fingers and his desk turned into a pile of chicken nuggets. “I didn’t even know that would happen.” His hat then came alive and began to yodel. “It’s pandemonium,” he explained. “It’s complete nonsense.”
