Mookie Betts was one of the guys who had the most plate appearances after an intentional walk in our dataset. He was also the player whose OPS shot up the most following an IBB.

What’s it like to be the batter after an intentional walk? Do you lock in more? Does it lead to more success? Or does the pressure get to you? How does it affect the pitcher?

For the latest @fangraphs.com mailbag, I asked 7 players these questions, and then had @jon-becker.com crunch the numbers:
FanGraphs Weekly Mailbag: September 27, 2025
This week, we answer your questions about the psychological effect of batting after an intentional walk, baserunning metrics, the coming labor war, and more.

Just looked up his Baseball Savant page and I hadn’t realized how much he’d seen declines in sprint speed, arm strength, defense, exit velocity and hard-hit rate over the past three years

Wild decision to intentionally walk Cal to face Julio there. I guess the Blue Jays like the matchup, but it also comes at the risk of a big Mariners inning.

The owners have and will always push for a salary cap, no matter what happens on the field. There’s no amount of competitive balance, perceived or actual, that will deter that—because competitive balance isn’t the actual goal.

I'm not linking it, you can find it, etc.

But yes, if you think owners aren't going to use back-to-back championships for the Dodgers based on what they've done in the off-season, you're insane.

Yes. It’s a combination of less playing time and a fairly significant power decline during the final two seasons of a six-year contract. He’s got a solid floor because of his OBP even as he ages, but the rest falls off.

I had the same reaction when @dszymborski.fangraphs.com sent me the projections. That's why I asked Dan for the contract value for the 75th-percentile projections. I think that's what teams are expecting Tucker's production to be.

I was very proud of this... so thank you!

The Yankees thought this was their best chance to win their first World Series since 2009. Now, they're once again wondering what went wrong and how they can fix it.

My story for @fangraphs.com on the state of the Yankees and where they go from here:

Aside from whether it hit bat first, he also very blatantly offered at that. Just a brutal call
mattmartell.fangraphs.com
That’s about as conclusive as the catcher’s interference in Game 3 of the Yankees-Blue Jays series. No idea how neither call was overturned
