When I was VFX Supervising STATION 19, they had a draft script where a long conversation took place between fire fighters and a homeowner in front of a burning Christmas tree. I showed them videos of burning trees like this and pointed there's no time to talk. They rewrote the scene.

I'm never going to understand "World VFX Day". Globalization is killing our industry in the state where it was essentially born. Not sure why I'd want to celebrate that.

Forever reminder that all awards competitions for art are dumb but the absolute dumbest one of all is the golden globes

I will forever be annoyed that NBC marketing randomly created this red vortex promo image that wasn’t scripted and wasn’t motivated by the story, and then insisted we change our realistic aurora borealis effect so that the pilot VFX would match the poster for no reason just days before the upfronts.
This might be the worst menu selection I've seen. Instead of labelling things like episode selection or subtitles we just use small icons that don't say what they are.

Thank you so much. And thank you for supporting the shows.
@marcguggenheim.bsky.social This month, the Arrowverse will be leaving Netflix, little by little, with Arrow being the first to go. Thank god for physical media, and thank you, Greg, and the other producers, and all the performers for doing the shows in the first place.

THE LOST BUS has some of the best fire effects I’ve ever seen. Great work by everyone involved.
In my latest article for ILM, I interviewed Dave Zaretti about ILM's astounding visual effects work on THE LOST BUS.

Today I learned that NASA has a collection of free ebooks that can be downloaded as pdfs or ebub format.

The science books even include a children’s section with fun activites and coloring books!

If we can only have art from people who "aren't in it for the money" that means we can only have art from privileged middle-class dilettantes. Making art being a viable career is responsible for nearly all worthwhile art, and if it's not a viable career any more we will get drastically less of it.

A famous guy I was a fan of sent an email during the pandemic just being like "hey I like your show, great job" and it meant a ton to me. So ever since I've tried to reach out whenever I really like something and just tell the people who made it "I really like this, thanks for making it!"
I’ve sometimes fallen into the trap of thinking that complementing a creative person for their work is less sophisticated or desired than discussion or debate about it but very often the best thing you can say to them is hell yeah and that doesn’t make you dumb it just makes you nice

NETFLIX QC: 00:27:03:15 There's a 10 pixel tall reflection in a champagne glass the waitress is carrying in the back of the room that may be literally anything in the room -OR- it could be a boom mic, so blur it out just in case.

HBO QC: You expect us to watch EVERY SCENE??? REALLY?
This is absolutely real. The current HBO Max version of this "Mad Men" episode "remastered for 4K" did not include an updated visual effects shot, which originally painted out the crew and equipment. Not just that, the HBO Max episode titles/order is jumbled for s01.
HBOMax has started showing a 'remastered' 4K Mad Men and they’ve messed things up so during Roger’s oyster vomit scene you can now see the crew men with the vomit hose on the right

Why does this always seem to happen at HBO? They need a better QC department.
