A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.

W.B. Yeats
Pinned
It is a commonplace that’s hardly worth
A poet’s while to make profound or terse,
That now the sun does not go round the earth,
That man’s no centre of the universe;
And working in an office makes it worse.

- W.H.Auden - Letter to Lord Byron -

Ongelma on globaali.

No mutta. Vähän niin kuin Suomen sitoutuminen vahvoihin hiilinieluihin. Nekin onnistuttiin muuttamaan päästöiksi.
Tällä hetkellä Suomi on sitoutunut osana EU:n tavoitetta vähentämään köyhyys- tai syrjäytymisriskissä olevien määrää 100 000:lla vuoteen 2030 mennessä. Sen sijaan lähtötasosta on liikuttu noin 100 000:lla päinvastaiseen suuntaan ja köyhyys on edelleen kasvussa.
SOSTE kannattaa EU:n köyhyyden vastaisen strategian valmistelua.

"Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war" wasn't "havoc" in just the modern sense of chaos, it was a particular order that was understood as heinous even in Shakespeare's day, authorization after battle was over to slaughter and pillage, both debilitated enemies and noncombatants, without restraint.

Pahinta tässä VM:n talousennusteen pettämisessä on se, että tällä kertaa sillä hyvällä ennusteella on annettu tukea todella radikaalille yhteiskuntapolitiikalle, jossa yhteiskunnan heikoimmassa asemassa olevilta on leikattu keskellä matalasuhdannetta ja samalla aiheutettu maahan suurtyöttömyys.

If I open an article and the splash banner is AI slop, I close the tab. If you don't have the bare minimum of discernment to not do that, what else do you consider "good enough" to publish?
I don’t know if anyone else notices or cares, but when I see a presentation in which the speaker uses obviously generated-AI images to illustrate their slides, it makes me immediately less confident in whatever other content they’re presenting.

Mediassa leviää vääriä väitteitä finanssikriisin jälkeisestä finanssipolitiikasta.

Tosiasiassa julkista taloutta on sopeutettu rajusti.

Julkisen talouden ongelmat johtuvat kasvun puutteesta, eivät liiallisista menoista.
Kaiken kaikkiaan Nokian romahduksen jälkeen julkista taloutta on sopeutettu päätöksin ehkä noin 15 mrd. eurolla nykyrahassa ilmaistuna. Tämä siis rakeenteellisesti pois hyvinvointivaltiosta. Miettikää, mitä kaikkea tuolla rahalla voisi saada lisää, jos tuotantopotentiaalia olisi käyttämättä!

The irony for me is how Musk bought Twitter with the clear intention of capturing & manipulating the press culture there — something many journalists reported on — and yet they stay there because each assumes they can’t be manipulated… while totally getting manipulated.
This is the correct take. Stewing in white supremacist propaganda is bad for your thinking. And if think you are so savvy that it won’t impact you, you are the exact kind of mark they are slowly converting (I’m looking at you, centrist pundits).
It’s really funny how a generation will roll its eyes at parents who watch Fox News but doesn’t see why being immersed in Twitter is having the same effect. Lots of serious people show up on Fox News too but that shouldn’t be your primary source on the news.

I think in part the higher education funding crisis and the LLM-teaching crisis actually strike at the same problem, which is that education doesn't work without a broad, society-wide sense that the *actual content* of education - not the credential - is valuable.
