The words aren't the book. They're the author's best attempt to capture their intent.
If you're too hung up on the words, you won't be providing the best translation. Take a step back and think like the author did.
Write for the situation, the character, the writing style, the emotions...
To my fellow translators: what do you wish someone had taught you about translation (whether the act or translation or having a freelance job) that you had to learn by yourself?

Fun fact that's making the rounds again: this is a Brazilian pop-rock song that was a big hit in the 80s.

The singer is British. Even in the original record, he has such a good Brazilian accent that a lot of people nowadays have no idea he isn't Brazilian.

Been yelling about this for ages. Feel like this is something that people in music spaces are much better at talking about.

Feel like in this space there’s a much stronger culture of “pushing through” things. So less room for that kind of self reflection.
I wish more people were open to doing this. Sometimes ur just not in the right head space afor a game. I’ve revisited games id earlier gave up on and added all time favorites to my list. I mean sometimes ur right the first time, but it’s worth the risk. 😂

Bandcamp offering a hand-picked human-curated "subscribe-to-own" service in an era of "AI" and algorithms wasn't on my bingo card (especially with them being thrown around between corporations).

Probably the sickest burn I’ve ever seen.
When we made our systemic game MirrorMoon EP about the manipulation of systems, the play of contingency, and the brokenness of machines, you commented, “Oh, so experimental games mean Portal guns now?”

It traumatised us so much we’ve been making games exclusively about Italian politics ever since
The interesting, sophisticated thing about games is not whether they can tell stories as well as books or movies (they can’t) or float shocking themes as well as fine art (honestly, who cares).

It’s the manipulation of systems, the play of contingency, the brokenness of machines.

For the longest time, Ubisoft was the only company consistently crediting translators in their games, so half of my career, according to MobyGames, is only Ubisoft titles.
That has the funny side-effect of showing Yves Guillemot as a "frequent collaborator" lol

It's so hypocritical to see companies banning a game that depicts naked (but censored) people in a non-sexual context while allowing BG3, a game that got even more popular for having sex and horny scenes.
Anyway, that's why I do not see Steam through rose-colored glasses.
December 3, 2025 at 5:46 PM
The whole thing with Horses being banned from Steam and now Epic feels like "compliance in advance" due to fear of payment processors, because neither platform provides a clear answer as to why they suddenly decided the game wasn't fit to be sold in their stores anymore.
