With the gangster rap of the day as my backdrop, I had a soundtrack and motivation. Now, navigating rough neighborhoods and running in them are two different things. I did the former but wasn't allowed to do the latter. My older cousins were in the scene but kept me out because I was the smart kid.

I was trying to be Mr. Up North tough guy, but honestly, nobody gave a fuck because I was freshman. But I was undeterred. Having an uneventful first year, I went back to Chicago to visit for the summer. My aim was to get in the streets and take those experiences back for my sophomore year.

So, her solution was to send me to Mississippi to stay with my father. I low-key hated it. It was a huge culture shock. While I visited family in the country down there many times, I only had to navigate it as a guest. That was easy. Now, it was my day to day.
