Turns out a more accurate comparison I should have made is to point out that the WNBA is valued at something like $3.5 billion now. Anyone who would agree to a 16% stake at $75,000 mil three years ago demonstrates a severe lack of imagination and faith in her product, at the very least.

You know how people are saying “Cathy Engelbert is a great businesswoman”? I beg to differ.

In 2022, she led the sale of a 16% stake in the W to a group of investors for $75 mil. This was based on a valuation of the entire league at $468 mil. Today, the Valkyries team alone is valued at $500 mil.

A year an a half ago, the NBA negotiated an 11 year media rights deal on behalf of the WNBA and the MNBA. The total was $77 billion - of which the NBA then decided the WNBA would receive just $2.2 billion or 1/35th of the total.

Here’s one main reason that was a bad deal for the W.

There’s a 3 year “reconsideration” clause (or something like that) but it sounds toothless. It doesn’t give the W the opportunity to opt out. I’m going to try to find the article.

I know, I know. And I read a really good article a year ago pointing out that 11 years makes sense for an NBA media rights deal since their viewership and attendance aren’t going to change much, but it makes no sense for the WNBA that is growing exponentially.

Unfortunately, in 2024, the NBA negotiated an 11 year joint MNBA- WNBA media rights deal set to start next year. The total amount is $77 billion. The MNBA decided the WNBA would only get $2.2 billion of that - which represent 1/35th of the total.

If WNBA players were to get 50% of of revenue it is estimated that would be about $250,000,000 in 2026, so that could mean (for example): 14 players per team, team salary cap set around $16.7 mil, max salary of $2 mil, vet min of $700,000 and rookie scale starting at $500,000 for 3rd round picks.

The proposal from the league doesn’t include a percentage of revenue going to the players unless league revenue exceeds certain targets. No one has reported on what what those targets are at this point.

The WNBA’s latest proposal has a max salary of $850,000 and a vet minimum around $300,000. Current max is $249,244, & vet min. is $78,831.

This might sound like a good deal for players. It’s not. If they got ~50% of revenue-like MNBA, NFL, NHL & MBL players-the AVERAGE salary would be over $1 mil.

I have never, in my life, seen a female athlete play sports with her long hair down, yet numerous male professional athletes play with their long stringy, sweat-soaked tresses whipping around their faces during games. I find it both impractical and gross.
