We were relieved he was safe. He applied for asylum.
Then, a few months ago he was caught up in an ICE raid. He was in the US legally, but didn't have the papers to prove he had entered the country regularly (as most asylum seekers don't).

The prison had been recently completed, but the Chinese government at that moment was insisting that the mass detention campaign was over. In fact they were continuing to build new facilities, albeit of a different type and Guan helped to prove that.

I still remember seeing his video for the first time, as he drove across Xinjiang filming, making excuses to drive down a one way street past one detention centre, tramping across fields, mounting a hidden camera on his backpack to walk past a series of prisons in the regional capital Urumqi.

Ahmed al Ahmed, 43, has been identified as the man who disarmed one of the Sydney attackers.
Ahmed was shot by the second shooter, who was firing from a bridge. He suffered 2 gunshot wounds and is undergoing surgery.
