I'm going to float this nuclear take: maybe students are increasingly turning to ShitGPT and other deskilling devices because the structure of the modern university has made it impossible for them to acquire skill in a deep way.

Let me paint a picture for you.

Yes, exactly! Also, this study is actually pretty revealing about the ways families continue to be excluded from the creation of these documents. It shows that families are *presented* with IEPs, not part of the process of creating them. A specific procedural legal requirement! 🫠

I'm concerned about the implications of assuming that because a large language model can write a child's IEP faster than a human that this means it's also necessarily ensuring that legal provisions are being complied with (and that's aside from questions I have about quality!) /3

At number 6 is a study on IEPs in the Age of AI. The findings conclude "overall positive perceptions on using AI to facilitate workload." I'm left wondering why as educators we continue to emphasize efficiency over democratic accountability? /2

RFK Jr. has awarded $1.6 million to a group in Denmark to conduct a randomized, single-blind study of the birth dose of Hepatitis B vaccine (HepB) to be conducted in Guinea-Bissau.

In my opinion, this is, quite simply, completely unethical, unacceptable, and predatory.

Here’s why.

NEW: Without USAID funding to help buy food for refugees, the World Food Program rushed to prioritize families based on need, determining that only half the population would get food.

Refugees learned which half they were in from a number stamped on the back of their ration card.
After Trump Officials Cut Food Aid to Kenya, Children Starved to Death
“Brutal and traumatizing”: Interviews and a trove of internal documents show government officials and aid workers desperately tried to warn Trump advisers about impending disaster and death.

This right here.
Anyone currently alive who has a secure (tenured) academic job in the humanities (& some other fields) can tell you they worked damn hard AND they’re unbelievably lucky.

There isn’t an overproduction of PhDs BTW: there’s overreliance on precarious underpaid jobs to teach courses that students NEED.

This tracks with my experience. DHS made up stories like this in Chicago, too. Every story ICE told about being attacked by community members was debunked in court. To assume anything they say is even potentially credible is irresponsible and out of touch with reality.
Re: the ICE actions in south Minneapolis Monday. DHS said "rioters" attacked officers with rocks and pepper spray. Note: I received lots of evidence and didn't see any rocks, the only pepper spray I saw was ICE agents sometimes spraying each other. I did see snow and possibly ice being thrown. (1)

If you are a white man in media and STILL whining about all the Black/poc/women who "took your jobs" after the absolute bloodbath/backlash and almost violent re-whitening of media, punditry and academia in the past year, you should go to therapy, find god/gods or take up knitting

Just my two cents

University of Colorado - Boulder - Assistant or Associate Professor of History | H-Net
The Department of History at the University of Colorado Boulder seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor or early Associate Professor specializing in Native American history with a focus on the North American West, broadly defined. The successful applicant will have access to funds associated with the Walter and Lucienne Driskill Professorship in Western American History. Specialization is open, but the department particularly encourages applications from scholars whose research focuses on the early American West (pre-1920s) and engages with legal history, the history of women and gender, environmental history, and/or the history of medicine and public health.  Scholars with demonstrated commitments to engaging Native American communities and/or supporting Native and Indigenous students are especially encouraged to apply, as are those who bring relevant lived and individual experiences and achievements to this position.

When my older 2 kids were choosing colleges, we looked at how they handled COVID. Did they prioritize safety & community? Did they use it as an excuse to cut faculty & staff? Are we OK spending tuition $$ there?

Youngest is applying now, and the question is, how are they handling this moment?

I know it's not the first time a suspect has remained at large, but having the FBI be headed by a buffoon and a DOJ that's largely focused on taking down political enemies is probably not helping.
Gotta say it's mindblowing to me that the Brown shooter is still at large and they don't even seem to have identified who they're looking for.

I agree with all this — sick leave is essential to a healthy society. While we’re working on that, though, we need to make it a general norm that if you MUST be around others while sick, you wear a mask (preferably a good one).
3/ Isolation is important but only works if people can afford it. Many people simply can’t stay home when sick. Without meaningful sick pay, asking people to isolate is unrealistic. Better financial support is essential to reduce transmission.
