I wouldn't say it's the first domino but hard agree.

"Reformer" Jessica Tisch can't even get NYPD to stop parking on the sidewalk and I'm supposed to believe she's a serious person.

NYDP has made death threats against citizens who report them to 311!
My hottest take is that letting cops park in red zones for mundane errands and coffee breaks; I think “you can break the law at your discretion as a job perk” is the small domino that ends in the large domino of “shooting protesters in the face with rubber bullets”
It must be wild to get to abuse the public then pay for it with the public's money

I'm thinking we bring back stockades, especially for ICE
Pretty active in local politics in Dallas and I've never seen anything like what I've witnessed the last few months. Literally no one wants to be reasonable.

Anyone @manjaro.bsky.social even want to apologize for letting the SSL cert on the forum expire this week? I checked the forum and couldn't find a single post about it. Guess everyone is just resigned to this shit at this point

They're using the confinement box, one of the most horrific methods of CIA torture in the post-9/11 black sites, against migrants now. This is the direct result of the lack of consequences for the architects of the torture program. Either there will be criminal penalties for this or it will expand.
Torture Techniques from CIA Black Sites Were Used at Alligator Alcatraz
Amnesty International, interviewing migrant detainees, identifies use of the confinement box. There can be no denying it is a torture prison

If you call it a “male immaturity epidemic,” a very different set of phenomena come into focus, as this thread shows
I'm starting to wonder how much "the male loneliness epidemic" is just straight and bisexual women identifying low-effort, mean, and incompetent men and choosing not to date, marry, and tolerate them anymore

helps to think about the details like any regular crime you'd see on one of the 800 cop shows that run on TV constantly: these guys committed one set of murders, thought it over, and then decided to kill the witnesses as part of the coverup. mention of drugs is just jingling keys at this point

"You're going to have to testify about these decisions under the harshest national spotlight possible" vs. "this will be forgotten and we'll just move on by then" are not equivalent incentive structures if you're one of those subordinates, both military and civilian. Even if conviction won't happen.

ICE is horrific...and also an extension of how policing has always worked, not a radical break from it.

I suggest that we start using the phrase "Mr. Beast and the CEO of Salesforce will be there too." as shorthand to explain how little we want to be at any given terrible event.

Wild to see Whelan say this, but to be clear the OLC's immunity powers are fake anyway. The "golden shield" idea was made up to justify rampant criminality in the GWBush years, then adopted by Holder to excuse Obama's inaction. It's not in the Constitution, statute, or precedent. It's not the law.
Does Pete Hegseth have a "golden shield" against prosecution in the form of a DOJ OLC opinion? Ed Whelan thinks not.

The Trump administration’s decision to apply pressure to the most amoral cowardly members of American society, big law firm partners and college administrators, is paying big dividends.

The reality, of course, is that Miller and a significant portion of Trump’s base are the ones who failed to assimilate to America’s post-WWII culture of multi-racial democracy & religious pluralism…and they are now using their power to destroy that once dominant (and still popular) American culture.
Stephen Miller is now arguing that assimilation is fundamentally impossible and that certain cultures are not compatible with Western civilization

You see he mentions lobbying briefly in this interview, but as usual he relegates it to a second tier problem behind his belief that America just loves bureaucracy for bureaucracy's sake.

When in reality the bureaucracy he despises is a byproduct of corruption (see: telecom regs, tax codes, etc.)

I will seriously pay like $20/month for a paper that is what the NYT thinks it is.

At this point I think I'm paying more than that to try and piece together something close. And I wouldn't necessarily cancel those subs either
I was paying for WaPo! I would pay more than 3x what that sub cost for a principled newspaper. Ideally one based in my city so I get local and national news.
