“…refusing the banality of cruelty, refusing to be worn bare, refusing to do violence unto each other — these may damn well be the closest we will come to revolution”

I really needed this essay, along with the term “palliative activism”.

Many have been struggling with hopelessness these last few years—and even more since the election. Too often I’ve asked myself how we should live in a world that can never be repaired. If that’s also you, I hope that you will find this essay on palliative activism helpful.
Palliative activism, or Fighting for justice without hope
The spirit within me wearies. I see each day pass another by, forever in want of change. I see the skies fall by a few inches each day. The…

Some people might laugh but there's something actually important in this as I have heard others talk about how a fear of dying is palpable among fascists. They carry hell with them in real life.

Australian LGBTIQA+ youth are already discriminated against through our laws, practices, community.

The Qld govt has prohibited their trans youth from accessing necessary healthcare through the public system because of bigotry.

Now take away their social media? Against all prof advice?

I just… 😓

Australian law says that any religious education facility can expel any student simply for being LGBTIQA+. With SM ban these students without caregiver, school, and online support…. What will they envisage for their future? How will they thrive?

Unconscionable. Unnecessary. All avoidable.

I am so concerned for LGBTIQA+ youth across Australia without supportive and affirming parents/caregivers.

Those at private religious education facilities? It’ll be like going back to the 1980s for these kids.

Where do they go? What limited choices will they think are before them?

All avoidable.

We’ve been saying this forever. The social media ban will harm kids
abcnewsbot.bsky.social
LGBTIQA+ advocates are concerned the social media ban will have a significant impact on queer youth in regional and remote areas of Australia. They say there are not enough offline, physical supports for these teens to access when the ban comes into effect.

Single JobSeeker just hit $400 a week
How would you go if you were getting that little and were randomly not paid?

they do this all of the time. They beat people and arrest them for celebrating.

Anyone who celebrates the release of a prisoner will be considered a target for "punishment and arrest" by Israel. Are you fucking kidding me?

Happy Wear It Purple day to everyone!

Now more than ever, trans youth need your visible support.

Hope you’ve got some purple on today, or even just some purple bling!

Reading about trans youth in Texas today. Awful. Fucking awful.

The cruelty is the point- those politicians are sick.

Trans youth deserve So. Much. Better.

Privileged supportive family’s are fleeing the state (fleeing the country if they can).

The rest are stuck there until they can escape 💔
lannen.bsky.social
Thinking of all trans youth out there without support. So many don’t realise that life will get so much better. Being unsupported and existing in a hostile home and school environment is temporary. It will get better. So much better. So hard to see that in the moment though. But it will improve ❤️

Further, I am going to block you because conversing is a waste of my time when you don’t even acknowledge trans people exist!! Stating falsely that it’s a “choice” causes harm to trans youth who have no choice in who they are. The rest of us though have choice whether to love our kids or not!

The Cass Review, which was a sham, even confirmed that less than 1% detransition.

The talking points you’ve been fed are incorrect and false. I’m sorry people have lied to you.
lannen.bsky.social
Gender and sexuality are different. But your talking points aren’t.

Less than 1% detransition.

I’m a parent. My kiddo is trans. They came out to my husband and I a decade ago. We supported them and affirmed them.

They’re thriving now. Mid-20s. No regrets in our family at all, other than I wish they had the words to express who they were when they were much younger.
lannen.bsky.social
You sound like you just stepped out of the 1980s and you’re talking about gay teens.

All these points you raise have been debunked. All of them.

I think that’s all any of us ever want: to be loved unconditionally. Trans kids are no different.

Also, unconditional love doesn’t mean love without boundaries or difficult conversations. Kids still need to think about poor choices when made, but being trans isn’t a choice. It’s who they are. 🏳️‍⚧️💝🏳️‍⚧️

I’m not saying parents have to throw a party the minute your kid comes out (though that might be nice for extroverted trans kids!!), but rigid negative responses means you only love your kids conditionally.

If you falter, apologise as soon as you can, then tell them they’re loved unconditionally.
lannen.bsky.social
I truly believe it’s as simple as loving your kids unconditionally. If a parent rejects their child simply because of who they are (trans), then that parent has put conditions on their love for their child (ie. the child must pretend to be cis to be loved).

Conditional love is not good parenting.

If all parents loved their kids unconditionally, this link wouldn’t be necessary. Parents need to/can do better!

Screen shot of one section of link which states:

Parents play a key protective role in reducing some of the health and wellbeing challenges commonly experienced by transgender and gender diverse young people. A review by Brown and colleagues (2020) examined the association between family relationships and the health and wellbeing of these young people. They found that those with parents who are supportive (both generally as well as specifically about gender identity), warm and caring, and who they can communicate with directly and honestly had better health and wellbeing (Brown et al., 2020).

The health improvements for transgender and gender diverse young people associated with supportive parents included (Brown et al., 2020):

1. reduced anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, disordered eating symptoms, self-harm and suicidal ideation
2. greater quality of life, life satisfaction and self-esteem
3. reduced risk of homelessness
4. improved sexual self-efficacy and consistent condom use
5. reduced risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

However, for parents to provide this support to transgender or gender diverse young people, they themselves may also need assistance and support (Riggs et al., 2020).
