If the Court arbitrarily strikes down this key part of the fourteenth amendment, I think Americans lose any moral obligation to show any allegiance to the laws enforced by a fundamentally lawless regime
Birthright citizenship is probably not integral to liberal democracy, but it is integral to *American* liberal democracy. Our vision of what we are as a country, as a nation beyond an ethnicity, requires it.

they were happy about the Blatter case because it seemed like a clean up and didn't realize that much more systematic reform was needed in order to remove the incentives to corruption and the structure that produces corrupt leaders. c.f. every Chinese anti-corruption campaign.
The world's wealthy liberal democracies looked the other way on FIFA's corruption for years because they didn't think corruption in sports was a big deal or worth addressing, and now find themselves looking at FIFA as a powerful, increasingly-integrated part of the far-right anti-democracy movement.

From driving the Confederates out of the US, to Jim Crow, to the Scopes Trial, to school integration. US liberal movements have failed to finish the drill. Pointing this out isn’t an attack on liberalism, and owning the losses seems to be the only way for us to be stronger in the future.
Was just talking to a friend tonight about how, stretching back to the civil war and all the way up to the current problem, are largely defined by liberalism getting reaction on the run or capitulating and then…failing to finish the drill, only to be surprised by the return of the vanquished.
