It's perfectly coherent if you think like elite high achievers: A's are what they deserve, but only because they do the work that high-achievers do. If you aren't doing that work you don't deserve the A. The product of that work, the thing which would ostensibly determine your grade, is immaterial.
The Atlantic crowd's critique of (elite) higher ed is not even internally coherent. OTOH, grade inflation is supposed to make it so easy that students almost always get As despite doing so little. OTOH, the system is so hard that students keep trying to game accommodations to get an advantage.
