I feel like one of the most underrated explanations for what's happening right now in global politics is that almost everyone has lost their minds.

Years ago, my colleagues at Business Insider and I tracked YouTuber “cancellation” arcs. What we found is that for many entertainers, “cancellation” actually sets the stage for a redemption arc, one that can raise their profile higher than ever. It wasn’t career-ending. It was fuel.

So I just went through and put all of the 2025 contingent-authored pieces from a journal in my subfield on the list. You can do the same if you want to boost contingent scholars in your subfield! It only took me 10 minutes.

One of my favorite Douglas Adams quotes:

“All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others.”

More timely today than ever, don't you think? 💙

I think one of the hardest things about being a parent for me, emotionally, is to realise how parents are supposed to love and look after their children, and how I didn't have that.

Also, how kids don't appreciate that love at this point in time, just as I didn't realise I was lacking it.

Relatedly: maybe also a good time to question our assumptions about why peer review is helpful in the first place.

OUP made similar errors in my book and didn't seem to even care about correcting them.
I'm not going to name either the author or the publisher, other than to say they are both major, and this novel was published this year.

If I wrote a book that was typeset as badly as this, I would be devastated.

How did this get through proofing?

The Republican Party has to be the biggest con job in US history. It’s always been a cult. They vote Republican cause their pappy voted Republican and his pappy voted Republican etc. not educated enough to think for themselves or to even realize they vote against their own best interests.

Another thing, when JD Vance and Stephen Miller are the folks you lean on for charisma and to speak to the people, you’re going to lose. Both of them have a personality that only sandpaper enthusiasts would enjoy.

I inherited all the family docs on both sides because I'm the only historian. If I ever do write a book based on all this stuff, it's going to be called, "White People are Crazy."

You know there's a new movie with Julia Roberts as a Yale philosophy professor (on Prime, called After the Hunt). I had to watch and it's just...unsufferable people being insufferable. I won't say I haven't met academics like this--if anywhere, they're at Ivies--but UGH just cliche after bad cliche.

The only reason to have the military in D.C. is to increase tensions and antagonize people to the point they over-react, creating "justification" for increasing crackdowns on innocent people. It's all a con.

Stephen Miller is a completely typical fascist, and there's no point trying to reason through his unhinged belief system. It's just a ball of hate. The only thing to do with fascists is stop them.

Our boiler broke yesterday and the house filled with foul-smelling smoke. Are they timed to always break on major holidays? Fortunately we do the quicker-roasting duck instead of turkey so nothing was in the oven yet. We watched movies under blankets with all the air filters on.

I get too much satisfaction using Amazon to find books, then ordering them from my local indie. I think I might be petty. 📚

The DC shooting story is really getting to me because we literally trained this man as a child soldier for a death squad in a forever war and Stephen Miller et al want to blame it on other cultures? It's our culture, American culture, that killed that woman.
