A studio having a huge breakout hit and then believing it has some secret sauce that makes it special which allows it to do whatever it wants for the next game because surely, it's different, to only fail with that next release is a tale as old as video game time.

Agree. To go a step further - an award like Best RPG isn't worth nearly as much unless voted on by a subset of critics/devs/etc who are /notably/ experts in the genre. Same for, say, fighting games - if a category like that sticks, the jury should include some pro players, tourney orgs, etc.
I think these awards felt especially boring because categories like Best RPG and Best Indie each honor overall quality among a subset rather than a specific craft. If a game is the best of the year, and it’s an RPG, obviously it is also the best RPG. Needs an overhaul to avoid pointless repetition

Ace Combat fans, if I wanted to finally try the series out am I safe to start with 7, or is it the best move to track down some of the older classics? Seeing a lot of love for 4.

Trying out the demo for this fantasy Disco Elysium like called Esoteric Ebb, and I’m immediately greeted with a Protomen reference.

…I think I’m gonna like this game.

With so much discourse™️ around Lara's body - here is one of the first things I ever wrote for our site. Because she has always been more and when tou discount the OG, you discount her impact.
Lara Croft: More than the Male Gaze - But Why Tho?
Lara Croft has always been more than an object. Although she has been sexualized she has never in need of a man to complete her story.

Anyway Expedition 33 is the game that should truly trigger full embracing of 'JRPG' as a descriptor of a certain subset of mechanics that emerged thru Japanese adaption of Wizardry, Ultima etc for consoles, rather than just 'RPGs made in Japan'. Diachronic process is real, language & context changes

After not loving Octopath 1 and struggled to get into Octopath II, Octopath 0 clicked with me from go thanks to some simple, but impactful structure changes. I'm only halfway through and I can't wait to play more. My full thoughts on YouTube and Podcast Services.

Let’s amplify LOVE instead.

Fuck the haters. I defy you. I am beaming extra love right into your face. Relax and be loved.

Sincerely, if you loved these games and don’t feel like you enjoy RPGs generally, I got you — just tell me something you loved about them and I will rain down recs of all-time greats you can continue to enjoy.
People who say they haven’t liked an RPG in decades until Baldur’s Gate 3 or Expedition 33 (two games quite literally built on the bones of other games) quite simply do not like RPGs
