I have been thinking of a business tax structure that has much higher rates for any company who employs people that have to be on governmental food and insurance to live and/or if the Executives make more than 50x the lowest paid worker.

Australia is paying $750m to a US prison company and $2.5bn in a secret deal to Nauru, yet the hundred or so asylum seekers in Nauru are starving.
It’s called corruption, and someone in authority should look into it.
‘Day by day I lose weight’: asylum seekers on Nauru get $115 a week, but a bag of grapes costs $20
Forbidden from working, people sent to the island by Australia say they are struggling to survive because food is so expensive

140,000 homes are currently being left vacant in Australia. 32,000 homes in Melbourne alone!

Air BnB has 160,000 homes on its books.

There are thousands of developers land banking properties in our cities.

We could legislate the end of a housing crisis very quickly.

The NACC was promised to be transparent and 'with teeth'. We got a gummy bear.

The other bits are twiddling at the edges. The mere appearance of real action. Underwhelming.

Broken promises from 2022:
– Science-based climate action
– Improved transparency and accountability

Walmart and McDonald’s are among the top employers of workers who rely on food stamps.

McDonald's CEO raked in $18.2M last year — over 1,000x the company's median employee pay.

Walmart's CEO pocketed $27.4M — 930x the company's median employee pay.

See the problem?

As an Aussie, I don’t care if US inflation is up & their economy is shit. That’s on their political choices.

But if those same political choices put the environment, geopolitical stability, the rule of law, and the military and financial well being of my country at risk, then I really fucking care.

I’ll be honest- this scares me, in a world where #Labor look so much like any Tory government. Here’s hoping they tackle specialist shortages and the cost of becoming one instead of hitting the public yet again. #medicare #specialists www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...
Australian taxpayers subsidise rising specialist fees as spending on Abbott-era Medicare safety net ‘explodes’
Exclusive: Health department data shows spending on the 2004 extended safety net has nearly tripled, from $324.9m in 2010 to $850.4m in 2024

Add this to the CSIRO cuts and uni cuts generally and the picture is unmistakable
The success rate for NHMRC Ideas Grants announced yesterday was just over 8%. That means 11 of every 12 people who applied got rejected. This is a culture changing level of rejection and frankly a point of national shame. This is a crisis for research.
I will not rest until we see this resolved.

It costs a lot less to house people.

These are not excuses; they are the conditions that make violence conceivable.
We are a rich nation so why not introduce a Universal Basic Income.

Food and housing security will go a long way to address these issues.

Trump did his transactional charm offensive, Mamdani countered without compromising.

He is very secure in who he is and in his positions. Its so fucking refreshing.
