A note on Queensland's coal extension plan - it can easily achieve a "75% by 2030 emissions cut" by continually quietly revising land-use emissions, only a little bit more brazenly than the prev govt' would've needed to when cutting coal by 2035.

No sweat

Okay, deep cut here, but it's important. I ran the numbers on Queensland (Aus) new emissions target of a 75% reduction by 2035 with one Q in mind: is it really ambitious?

Important because QLD remains one of the world's biggest coal pits - and it burns a lot for power, too

So: here's a thread!
Queensland sets new 2035 climate emissions reduction target
Steven Miles says one of his first tasks as the new state premier will be legislating a 2035 emissions reduction target of 75 per cent. He says the new goal "sets a floor for the federal target".

Good luck keeping a stadium on time and on budget.

They'd probably build it then find it was unsuitable for AFL matches.

"A 2014 analysis of about 9,000 discarded nets that washed up on Australia’s northern coast estimated ghost nets had killed between 4,866 and 14,600 sea turtles in the year before they made land...

Ghost Net Initiative, a $15 million fund...is about to expire."

The fact that they are 'negotiating' with the Libs is all the evidence we need that the new 'reforms' will be catastrophically shit.

They're 'consulting' the minerals council ffs.

The environment is doomed.

A new study published in Nature Climate Action finds Woodside’s Scarborough gas project could cause 100s of heat-related deaths & exposed 500k people to unprecedented heat.

Govt can’t claim climate leadership while approving projects like this.

It's OK, a whole new system is starting on November 1, we'll never know how similar it is to the whole new system that didn't actually start in February or the other one that didn't start in July

but this one is the real deal

fear not

Leo Puglisi from @6newsau.bsky.social gave evidence to the parliamentary inquiry on the social media age ban - I asked him about the real impacts on young people. This isn't about protection, it's about control. You can't lock kids out of news and social connection and call it safety.
