For today’s bonus “One First,” I wrote about the Supreme Court’s 1827 decision in Martin v. Mott—and how, despite what the Trump administration and its supporters claim, it doesn’t come *close* to precluding courts from reviewing a President’s claim that circumstances warrant domestic use of troops:
Bonus 183: Martin v. Mott
The Trump administration claims Justice Story's 1827 ruling establishes the President's unreviewable power to decide when domestic use of the military is needed. It doesn't come close to saying that.

Seems bad to me that the national Students for Justice in Palestine is not just against the war and the occupation, but is so openly pro-Hamas that they support reprisal killings against "collaborators."

Hours after the man accused of an arson attack on the Pennsylvania governor’s mansion in April pled guilty to the attempted murder of Gov. Josh Shapiro, the governor appeared to publicly acknowledge for the first time that the attacker targeted him for his faith.
Josh Shapiro: Anti-Jewish hate a ‘motivating factor’ in arson attack at governor’s residence
The suspect, Cody Balmer, pled guilty Tuesday on charges of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault and aggravated arson

WRT older polling data: That's wild!

However, I tend to think most folks interpret "right to exist" & q's like that refer to the actually existing State of Israel founded in 1948.

Hence the emphasis on the state's existence & why polling shows so much leeway to criticize the govt & its actions.
I'm way late to this & basically agree w you wrt Pete for the Mets, but it's def true that certain players have value way beyond the field to particular franchises.
Derek Jeter's 2010 FA for example is an almost perfect example of special value to the Yankees. That obviously isn't Pete for the Mets.

The unfettered right to vote is as American as motherhood, baseball and apple pie.

It's the cornerstone of our democracy.

The Supreme Court must uphold the Voting Rights Act and the Constitutional protection against racial gerrymandering.

*the q wrt genocide neglects to mention the dolus specialis necessary for a finding. I'm not sure how to or whether it would be advisable to ask that in such a poll, & I think that concept is part of what's bifurcating opinion.

Similar findings for Israel: 76% believe Israel is vital & that opposition to Israel's right to exist is a form of antisemitism & ALSO over half of Jewish Americans believe Israel committed war crimes & neary 40% believe there was a genocide in Gaza.*

It's not either/or. It's both/and. 2/x
Pair these findings together: 85% believe there is some or a lot of antisemitism on campus but also see below to get a sense of where most Jewish Americans are at.

There is a needle for the Dems to thread to get serious about antisemitism as Jews understand it. I'm increasingly skeptical they will.

"The poll finds 42 percent of Jewish Americans say they’ve avoided publicly wearing, carrying or displaying anything that might help people identify them as Jewish in the past year. That is up from 26 percent who said that to a similar question in a 2023 poll." www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2025/...
More U.S. Jews shield identity in public amid antisemitism fears, Post poll finds
A third of U.S. Jewish people say they don’t feel safe, and two-thirds report seeing antisemitic content online at least once a month, a Washington Post poll finds.

Two new academic articles examined whether democracies can recover from authoritarian leaders like Trump — and came to seemingly opposed conclusions.

I dug into the data and talked to the researchers. The real story is at once more hopeful and concerning that it seems.

Can America recover from Trump? Here’s what new data says.
New political science research suggests democracy can survive leaders like Trump. But there’s a catch.

They were calling for a unilateral ceasefire and for dismantling Israel altogether, days after October 7th. They tore down posters of hostages.
I can’t help but think today about how many young people were savaged on social media, branded as anti-semites and abandoned by their schools for daring to call for a ceasefire. I remember saying that it was the first time I can remember that calling for ceasefire was regarded as a hostile demand.

People don’t want to hear this but the principle consequence of making I-P an omnicause is the creation of a million new antisemites who, as a nice bonus, are unequipped to address any other issue sensibly.

Establishment American Jewish organizations like the ADL and AJC spent weeks denouncing Rep. Ilhan Omar for her "All about the benjamins" tweet about AIPAC.

Neither the ADL nor AJC have said anything about Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene responding to AIPAC with, "I'll never take 30 shekels."
Tweet from Marjorie Taylor Greene: “No bar codes on me.
I’ll never take 30 shekels.
I’m America only!🇺🇸
And Christ is King!”
Possibly dumb q: his bat speed and bat on Ball markers are all very strong. Is that why? Because I don't think it would explain barrels but maybe I'm wrong?

I was very glad to write this article and I hope people pay attention to it. It’s very important.
“Uttering, promoting, and in some cases even tolerating anti-Israel rhetoric that crosses the line into anti-Semitism does double damage,” @ibishblog.bsky.social argues: both fueling violent attacks and tarring the pro-Palestinian movement.
Anti-Semitism Is Poison for the Palestinian Cause
No good will come to the pro-Palestinian movement from any association with violent attacks.

Good piece, but just as we should expect the pro-Palestine movement to police antisemitism in its ranks, so too should pro-Israel political groups in the US do a whole lot more to purge the overt Islamophobes.

1000% yes. What I wonder is: what about something structured similarly to what Santander got from TOR, albeit somewhat bigger/more expensive?

Ian Carroll, whom Democratic representative Ro Khanna is featuring in this video, claims Israel invented Holocaust denial to discredit its critics, that the US is controlled by a "Zionist mafia," and that Jews did 9/11.

Really bad that Democrats are platforming overt antisemites like this!
I don't take a dime from any PAC or lobbyist, including AIPAC.

I am proud to be one of the handful of Democrats standing up against Big Money.
