I posted to this effect yesterday BUT ALSO: there will always be a nonzero number of indie game developers who will reject AI. We don't have to reward companies that sell out to the fascist slop machine.
The dorks who insist AI is inevitable, especially in the games industry, deeply underestimate how much I’ll just shrug and play retro games for the rest of my life.

Like the PS1 & PS2 libraries alone are enough for multiple lifetimes.

Fuck you, make me.

Imagine the apollo project tried to get to the moon by building a jet airliner, and when that didn't work they spent a trillion dollars building bigger ones. That is how misconceived current LLM translation efforts are: they cannot work and we knew why decades ago.
When I was at uni -- before I graduated with mediocre pass degrees in linguistics and comp.sci -- I thought I might be able to do useful work in machine translation. Turns out I can, turns out "this will obviously never work don't spend a trillion on it" is something that hasn't been said enough.
So current "AI" translations work by slotting in the word they think is most likely for the *local* context, which is marginal for low-context texts like recipes but obviously unsuitable for narrative text where callbacks matter. I have thoughts on why managers don't understand this, but...

Nothing grates me more than when AI game dudes are like "Don't you wish you could ask an NPC aNyThInG?" Absolutely fucking not. If you don't understand that every piece of writing is made with intention, character, and meaningful choice... you probaby shouldn't be directing a fucking video game.

Jane Austen used 'however' at the beginning of a sentence, and so can you.

You'll probably never have an idea that no one else has ever had, because that's not how human cognition works. And yet you have the power to execute even the blandest and most common idea in ways that no other human being, living or dead or yet unborn, would ever do.

"we USE ai, but our game wont CONTAIN it" is a clarification that no one has ever cared about & now CEOs are using it as a wedge to get their foot in the door as a part of a long term plan into normalizing AI, just like how 'it's just placeholder' was used with E33. dont cede even an inch of ground

I don't know why the idea of developing concept art with AI is somehow meant to convince us that AI isn't replacing creative professions, when concept art is one of the single most creative and imaginative parts of the entire development process.

And if anyone claims the words I dug out from the ADHD mines in my brain and put out into the world are fucking AI, we'll find out if I can push a full Diaper Genie through a screen to the commenter on the other side.
I haven’t yet been accused of using AI to write—I love semicolons and em dashes, I FUCKING LOVE EM—but the first person who does that to me is going to be made a goddamn example of

I won't be touching anything made by @larianstudios.com until they rip AI out of the workflow, root and stem.

I don't care what they're using it for. It's a theft machine that's killing people, our planet, and creating an economic bubble that's going to ruin tens of millions of lives when it pops.

Look man I don’t think the people being poisoned by data centers really care if you remove the generated assets before shipping, and I don’t really care if you “only” use the machine that stole my shit and convinced teens to off themselves for internal PowerPoints.

Cool motive. Still bullshit tho.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I know you only care about finished art but placeholder art also needs to be made by a human being who also needs to be paid for that

But placeholder midjourney slop cuts that artist out
