by Christopher Farrell - Heaven loves you, the clouds are for you, life is a pop of the cherry, when you're a boy. The Replacements, this summer's model of permanent boyhood, announce their virgin star-hungriness in the anonymity of technical eliche, cogs in the industry ofjoy, with the wry optimism of unfettered aggression. Their youth (the oldest is 20) makes for whirlwind sets and gears the anger thät drives them against the Album-Oriented-Rock devils.. But youth at its most obvious, as sheer flower-ing, is why this band is sweet. Like the other local post-new-wave-synthesists (like Husker Du and the REM's), the sound is hard and fast in the already-classic punk manner, the musical ideas taken from reo-rockabillies like Johnny Thunders and Rockpile, who do 'billy with mod boun-ces, electronically sloppy for the effeet of unstudied crudeness and exhuberance. Four white punks out of South Minneapolis who play music their lead vocalist Paul Wester-berg calls "dirt," the Replacements are already playing as an emotionally compatible group after only a few gigs, all pushing into the same groove to get their wham-slam pitch as high as it will go. Unpretentious, their only pretension is talent. An epithet proceeds, mumbled seeker-to-seeker in the air-cooled clubs: "A good young band." Kids looking out of dirt-eyes, yes, the Replacements are aristocrats of their own characters, rebels even to their friends, who seek out the reassuring churn-loops of heavy metal. The material is still finding all its voices. The lyrics shift nightly, some of the music, too. Song titles show a liking for the diréctness of commo-nalities: "Shut Up.' & "We Hate Music," "Restless," "Get on the Stick," with a humor that can cut away the fat, though even in the chanting howl of Paul Westerberg's ultra-solid voice those lyrics don't always translate through the PA into intelli-gibilty. And though rife with borrowings from rockabilly and mod, showing us the irony of the avant-garde, that it is caught, in part, 'looking back' to make itself over and against the main-stream, the Replacements vibrate with enough charm and wit to keep the dancers up on their pointed toes. Drummer Chris Mars calls the music "power-new-wave-rock,* and he is certainly entitled to choose his own label. But neither he nor any of the others seem enamored of labels, except of the record, company kind. Right now, in the youth of their youth, carried by the tribal witness of the pumping jacks on the dance floor, they are along for the fun. Tonight at the Longhorn is only their fourth or fifth public appearance, but all the planets must be in line. The excitement is not quite at a pitch as, say, it was at the Suburbs debuts three years ago, but the makers are there. The Twin Tone trio, Paul Stark, the Blackberry Way engineer. Charley Hallman, looking like sports-writing has won after all, and Peter Jesperson, vinylologist and soothseeker, are sizing the lads up and down, bright eyes and dark mouths. Somebody is taking their picture tonight. And in just a few days, feeling flush, they will open Johnny Thunders' unannounced first-night appearance at 7th Street Entry, a wedding ofboth musical affinity and rank coolness The Torpedos, who are supposed to open tonight's bill, fail to appear, so the Replacements get a chance to live up to their rame early. The brothers Sinson, Tom on bass, Bob on guitar, are Laurel and Hardy in contrast. Bob, the taller and heavier by far, wearing a dark shirt cut-off at the shoulders, while Tom, whose réal age is guarded in confidentiality, is nonstop leap.$ and-jump, the Favorite Girl watching in awe. Tom plays wise kid, walks up to the mike between songs and snarls one-worders: "Rowdy?" Chris Mars drums loud, fast and hard, the back against which the rest of the band play fore-ground. Lead vocalist Paul Westerberg points his jaw at the ceiling, his attitude in the lights, so poised for a new kid, his voice beguiling by strength and naive purity, unsullied by bad habits. In a rush of this sort it's not surprising that the group seems to be writing a new song everyday. the amount of material they have assembled in just four months is a bit staggering. It is still too early to tellhow all of it will work itself out, but the talent is unmistakably there in the raw, as everyone in the room senses. They simply have the feel. To a dirty white boy, the Replacements find the slick heavy-metal sound a bore, but they understand that the music's time will come so the complaints aren't worth their load in sweat. They don't care about the money, nah. They're just punks, not like Johnny Rotten (though Wes-terberg can't help borrowing from him), but punks American-style, which is simply saying if . you don't like us, fuck you. One two-three-four! They're just getting into the game so they dog's know the distractions yet. This is their best time, whether they know it and dance and blow eve. ryone's wang dang doodle. As Bob Mehr notes in his Replacements book "Trouble Boys," it was barely three weeks since the Mats' first proper club show
