I didn’t make it to last night’s Bob Mould show at the Turf Club in St. Paul. Bob apparently mentioned that his dad was “frugal” and stayed at the Midway Motel when he came to visit while Bob was at Macalester. Approximately 45 years later, the Midway Motel is still hosting guests on Snelling Ave.

He didn’t. But it was cool that fellow Sugar bandmate David Barbe was the opener for the show!

Just curious, has Bob played anywhere else on Nicollet? Yes! He has played the Dakota twice (1010 Nicollet), 10-19-2010 & 6-15-2011. And he played an outdoor Super Bowl celebration 2-3-2018 @ 8th/Nicollet. Drummer John Wurster called it the shortest, weirdest, coldest set he has ever played.

As I was putting this together, Bob (sort of?) confirmed on social media that the video is from the Icehouse building!

Thanks to everyone who attended last night's show at Icehouse in Minneapolis. Fun fact: Icehouse was the name of the building in which the "Could You Be The One?" video was filmed. SOTN: Hoover Dam. Tonight's show at Turf Club in St. Paul is sold out.

Other connections to this block? Well, Hüsker Dü Database notes that the promo video for “Could You Be the One?” was filmed “in a large warehouse-like building across the street.” That has to be the Icehouse building, right?

And in 1985, Terry Katzman, one of their closest friends and frequent sound guy for the band, opened Garage D’or Records at 2550 Nicollet with Jim Peterson and Paul Stark. Bob and Grant (and Dave Pirner) did an in-store performance there on December 21, 1985. Image from Hüsker Dü Database.

The last time Bob Mould sang and played guitar on the 2500-block of Nicollet Avenue was probably during the recording of “Warehouse: Songs and Stories,” Hüsker Dü’s final studio release during the band’s existence. The band’s final four records were recorded at Nicollet Studios.

Duffy’s, October 1983. From City Pages. Before you fall out of your chair, the Police and A Flock of Seagulls were both events celebrating those bands; not concerts featuring performances by them. The Police had played back-to-back nights at the Met Center in August of that year.

It appears that Prince meant “Uptown” in “the more metaphorical state of mind…”
From the Kristen Zschomler Multiple Property Documentation Form: Prince, 1958-1987:
The exact location of the recording studio had not been identified in previous books or articles on Prince.
While the Dirty Mind album sleeve states it was "Recorded in Uptown" (Minneapolis), it appears that Prince meant that in the more metaphorical state of mind that he sang about in his song "Uptown" from the album as opposed to an exact geographic location. xix Biographers Per Nilsen (1999: 261) and Ronin Ro (2016: 45-46) gave a general description of it being recorded in a rented house on Lake Minnetonka, where Prince lived from late 1979 or early 1980 through early 1981. His sound engineer from the time, Don Batts, stated that the house was located on the "north arm" of Lake Minnetonka, but no address was provided.
Based on items contained in a recent Prince auction and subsequent reviews of city property records, however, there is now documentation that the house was located at 680 North Arm Drive in Orono, Minnesota, on the North Arm Bay of Lake Minnetonka (demolished and a new house built on the original foundations). xxx

Google Maps seems a little funny about Mound/Orono when you enter the address. It’s actually in Orono. But, yes, the greater Lake Minnetonka area.

The album was recorded at the home and studio he rented at 680 North Arm Drive in Orono. He lived there from late ‘79 to early ‘81. The place was later demolished after a fire in ‘82.
