Eleven years ago, I wrote to Tom Stoppard to ask about this coup de théâtre from 1949. It took me down an unexpected rabbit hole - in memory of Stoppard, here's what I found.

There aren't really shortcuts to writing, the process is bumpy, you take the thing in your head and try to explain it to others. You can't delegate that to a machine that can't really see into your head. 🧪🩺 #ScienceSky
You must struggle through it because the struggle is the point.
The enshitification of scientific publishing marches on. First arXiv had to clamp down on submissions thanks to a flood of AI-written papers.

Now ICLR authors say their peer reviews were churned out by AI. Reviews full of hallucinated content that didn’t exist and offering useless, vague feedback.
Major AI conference flooded with peer reviews written fully by AI
Controversy has erupted after 21% of manuscript reviews for an international AI conference were found to be generated by artificial intelligence.

I'm reading ENTANGLED LIFE & the more I learn about anything the squishier any presumed distinction gets. Oh, you think you're an individual? PSYCHE! There's more not-you microbes in your body than there are "you"!

And then there's quantum mechanics! Nothing exists! We don't understand anything!

All right, I see it's that time again.

If you want to give this holiday season in a way that helps actual Indigenous people? Give ONLY to Native-founded, -run, and -staffed programs. They know what's needed in their communities.

Hey everyone,

I hate asking again, but the movers we hired ripped my family off. Quoted us about $4k then extorted another almost $4k. I’m sick from overwork, will have to miss work to recover and we’re down a lot more than planned.

See quoted posted below for donation links.

Anything helps.

A ? About suck: my 10th grade journalism teacher would allow certain swears in context, but forbade "sucks" from her classroom. I assumed b/c it meant D.

Now, "suck" has persisted, (though journalism has withered) & I wonder: what does "suck" as a descriptior mean to folks? D, or something else?

Here are a few of the many reasons: a long history of financial fraud, stealing land & resources from Native people, exploiting stereotypes, being jerks in general

AND supporting your local library is super important! If you actually DO want books to be available to everyone, the library *already exists* and is staffed by the people who are deep in the trenches of fighting censorship! Supporting the library is doing actual good for your community!

For like the zillionth time: Libraries are FREE for you, but WE still get compensated for our work!!
Just saw someone claim that authors who want to be paid for their work are "class traitors" because we "only let the wealthy" read our books, and I think I need to go into the woods to scream into the night for a bit.

It's $5, not your first-born child! I need that $5 for health insurance!
