The underlying message seems to be that adoptees should be "more grateful" and put more effort into being "less of a burden"... something that would more readily seen as disgusting if it came from biological parents (forgive me if that is the wrong term to use)

Happens all the time. Society assumes we adoptees know the truth of our origins and receive some sort of adoption file when we're 18. Truth is our birth certificates are altered and the original ones are legally hidden. We have no right to know our identities. Can't even annul our adoptions.
