Important words from the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Minnesota, where I served as a priest before moving to Texas. ⚓️

I called yesterday and will call again today. If you’re new to it, 5calls.org has got your back.

’Tis bitter cold,
And I am sick at heart.

ICYMI: In my newsletter I wrote about some recent public lands news, various things to keep an eye on as we start 2026, and an effort to undermine the public’s desire to keep mining out of Minnesota’s Boundary Waters.

Good morning.
National media should really be covering the fact thay every major school, museum, and arts institution in the Twin Cities, and hundreds of local businesses are closed tomorrow to protest federal occupation.

Nothing like this at this scale has happened anywhere in America anytime in living memory.

If they can use the Congressional Review Act on the Boundary Waters, than they can use it on any public lands in the future.

I know there’s a lot going on, but yesterday the House passed HJ Res. 140 to roll back protections in Minnesota’s Boundary Waters, potentially opening the land up to copper mining. Time to contact your Senators, switchboard: 202-224-3121.

The vote is tomorrow. Tell your elected representatives to vote NO on HJR 140. I give a short explanation why in the attached. This affects how MAGA goes after ALL public land, not just the BWCA, so please take action, no matter where you live.

Brief check-in with the Farmall project. Doing some loose reassembly with a mix of new paint and old working clothes.

Can't wait to read it!

TIL that a park ranger named Art Sedlack became something of a folk hero among conservation groups in the 1970s after he shot the carburetor on a trespassing snowmobile at Glacier National Park.
Blueskis, studies have shown that when folks see or hear about a book more than five times, they are likely to check it out, and buy it.

So in the spirit of creating buzz, here is the gorgeous cover of THE WESTERNERS, which will be published on March 31!

Nice statement on AI in the classroom by the Price Lab, far more nuanced than the one the AHA produced: "The AI-free spaces will become a vital part of the college experience and positively affect learning habits if students expect to spend time there as part of their ordinary coursework."

If your resolution this year is to support more independent bookstores, hi!👋🏽

We’re Bookshop.org, an ethical alternative to Amazon for buying books online where every purchase supports indie bookstores all over the U.S. 😌📚
