Closely related is the “you said voting and winning the last election would defeat the far right but the far right still exists!” straw man that gets trotted out in the months before every election.
I fucking hate the way social media has embraced the “win every election forever can’t be the answer” straw man. Yes, we need structural change. Yes, it’s hard. Yes, it will continue to be hard and require work. Every time I see this it feels like people lusting for an easy forever answer.

we should take teaching more seriously
Larry Summers tells @theharvardcrimson.bsky.social
he’s stepping back from all public commitments in light of his messages with Epstein, saying he is “deeply ashamed” and hopes “to rebuild trust and repair relationships.”

He will continue teaching.

His actual position seems to be “a left leaning party doing ANYTHING its opposition can frame as ‘left wing’ is political malpractice” which lol

If Labor said “we want fracking for all!” today then tomorrow it would just be something different
so the closest is @mattyglesias.bsky.social claiming the uk gov is unpopular . . . . because they banned fracking

this is **such** a bad take

1. fracking isn't a major issue here, people don't vote on it

Could argue the misogyny Summers expressed both publicly while president of Harvard and in emails to Epstein says more about the culture at our most elite institutions than any of the frontpage freakouts over academia in the past few years but hey

it didn't even really provide me with any new information but that one email between epstein and some other random rich elite saying "when will the madness end" about the metoo movement felt like a key unlocking my brain that will explain every unforced institutional capitulation we've seen

People want to believe that the GOP’s electoral success in red states is the result of dirty tricks and gerrymandering instead of the sincerely held beliefs of a majority of the population because a mechanical issue is easier to fix than wrestling with how to make people not believe what they do.

It’s apparently way more satisfying to show up every 4 years and go “these candidates suck, I’m not voting for them” than to vote in the primaries and have a say in who the candidates are.

There is a group of people on this site who are out and proud about that strategy.

as if the moment they started doing this along these exact lines these same folks wouldn’t say “well it’s not our job to be a propaganda wing of the Democratic Party”
I am also for Democrats getting off their asses and engaging in the media world as it is. If they did a better job with that, I might've been spared teaching my mom how to respond if she's ever stopped by ICE.

One thing I keep screaming from the rooftops: "The border" and "Immigration" ARE SEPARATE ISSUES. You can be (and most Americans are!) pro-immigration but also desirous of a well-regulated border. We want our immigration process to be welcoming, generous, and orderly.
Some Dems and pundits overread the significance of Trump's win. They looked at dissatisfaction with the border and discerned a seismic cultural reaction to immigration levels inside the country. The former was real. The latter is a mirage.

Reminder: there are no trade deals. Nothing binding was actually signed. 90% of news coverage you saw about “trade deals” was wildly misleading. It’s pretty weird. And it will get weirder as “deals” turn out to be not deals, actually.

It’s not just that Trump is personally a rapist, though there’s lots of credible evidence to suggest that he is. It’s that he is promoting a fundamentally pro-rape ideology, and that the permissiveness for rape and entitlement to rape that are core to his worldview are central to his appeal for men.
