There are only two things, two things only, that truly make someone part of [demonym here], and this is true for basically all identity groups that humanity has thought of. One, they must sincerely believe they are part of that group. Two, other members must accept them as such. That's it.

We need to better internalize the idea that for too many people, "enlightened future" and "BASICALLY GERMANY IN 1938" are actual, honest-to-god synonyms.
