The enhanced premium tax credits are a thing Biden did to make the ACA better. They are in danger. If they expire a lot of people will be made a lot worse off.

People are defending the ACA because it actually has real material impacts not because of emotional commitment to institutions.
Not trying to add to the pile on, but this way of understanding politics is totally mysterious to me. What is the appropriate amount of emotion to dedicate to any given issue and how do we know when that threshold has been met or exceeded.

It's pathetically clear that DHS won't hold its own officers accountable. But when masked ICE agents abuse their authority, they are not immune from local laws.

I'm with @repdangoldman.bsky.social: NYPD must uphold the law when ICE breaks it.

Cleve Jones gave a riveting, rousing speech at San Francisco's No Kings rally yesterday, and he's graciously allowing me to publish it. He began: "The pronouns I use the most are the ones probably understood the least by those in the White House today. They are WE, US and OURS."
Cleve Jones: "This Is Our Country"
This is the first guest essay at Meditations in an Emergency. I'm proud to bring you yesterday's speech by the great Cleve Jones, who has for nearly half a century been a key organizer for the global ...

And note too that Santelli's rant wasn't directed at financial institutions, it was directed at people who defaulted on their mortgages (who generally didn't get bailed out!)
The comparison to the Tea Party is right -- not just in terms of the size of the protests, but the complaints they're making.

The Tea Party began when a CNBC reporter and a crowd of bond traders threw a tantrum about Obama continuing the post-crash bailouts that Bush began. That was their "tyranny"
Remember April 2009 when about 250,000 people took to America’s streets in Tea Party rallies and the media was like “oh man, the Dems are in trouble?” Approximately 28X as many people took to the streets to protest Trump yesterday. Didn’t even make the NYT front page.

My husband was bitten by a sea otter who climbed onto his board on Vancouver Island last spring. Thanks to a thick wetsuit, the bite left only an impressive bruise.

Bottom line: they're the real locals. Like sharks and other marine life, the ocean is their home and we're guests when we visit.
