Jason, upon seeing me in my hooded sweater dress overlaid with a second, fuzzier long sweater: “Wow, you are fallpilled and comfortmaxxing.”

Hells yeah I am 🍂🍁
Simply writing all these people off as monsters doesn’t Thanos-snap them away and replace them with an electorate of well-educated, thoughtful news junkies.
I’m focused less on who deserves condemnation and more on how we can realistically make things better given the voters we have. Most Americans are shockingly ignorant about current events, have very short memories, and don’t think terribly deeply about political philosophy.
Alright, since you’re a member of the Elect, how would you suggest we punish the ~77 million sinners who voted for him? Shall we have them all put to death? After all, they are innately evil and incapable of change. The death penalty seems the only way to rid society of such irredeemable monsters.
A lot of voters will just reflexively vote for the other party if things are going badly for them, or the same party if things are going well, and that’s the extent of their thoughts about politics. To ignore the existence of those people is to ignore most American voters.
Admittedly, I didn’t have as clear a view of people who voted for him last year — though from what I’ve read, he was pushed over the top mostly by working-class people who were (and still are) struggling and have never paid close attention to the news but just wanted something to change.
I centered 2016 because that was when I most clearly saw people slowly undergoing the mental transition from “This guy is horrible” to “But I have to vote for him anyway” to “Actually, he’s GREAT and I have NO cognitive dissonance to resolve in any way!”
And I’ve personally seen a number of his voters (including enthusiastic ones!) admit they were wrong, and move dramatically left even in spite of the judgment they face from liberals. So there absolutely is a way back, but we can also make it easier by extending some grace to these new converts.
Again, it depends on who you mean by “they.” His enthusiastic supporters are not 100% of the people who voted for him. Like, the one guy I knew who voted for him in ‘16 did so reluctantly, believing he was the lesser of two evils in the same way I voted for Clinton reluctantly, believing the same.
To resolve that cognitive dissonance not by admitting they were wrong to vote for Trump but by convincing themselves that Trump is actually a GREAT man. There IS no contradiction: you’re a good person who voted for a good person! And he’s making America great again!
And seeing posts like yours, asserting that all Trump voters voted out of a love of evil, doesn’t help. Like, no one’s obligated to be friends with Trump voters, but this attitude does make it so there’s no way back. And that does create the incentive to just double down.
Most people need to believe they’re good people, and it’s really hard to hold in one’s head multiple ideas: “I’m a good person.” “I voted for a horrible man.” It’s also hard for people to admit they made a mistake.
You could see a lot of these people start out as never Trumpers in the 2016 primary, then try to justify their vote by saying, “Maybe he’s like King Cyrus — a bad man and an unbeliever who can nonetheless do good things.” But there’s cognitive dissonance there.
Or Republicans who found him personally distasteful but couldn’t bring themselves to vote for a Democrat. A lot of people held their noses to vote for Trump in ‘16 the way I held my nose to vote for Clinton.
It really depends on the voter. The enthusiastic supporters did. But enthusiastic supporters have never been enough to win any election. Trump needed a much larger group of people who weren’t paying much attention and thought “He seems different and things are shit — might as well give him a try.”
Especially when their homeschooling curriculum teaches formal logic and rhetoric because “classical = old-fashioned = good.” The kids eventually turn those logic and rhetoric skills on conservative Christianity.
If you’ve delved at all into the world of “exvangelicals,” you know that, while the PLAN might be to indoctrinate their kids into their ideology and isolate them from diversity indefinitely, things don’t always go according to plan.

It’s important to remember that community care doesn’t have to come in the form of $100s in donations or dropping off pallets of food.

Sometimes it’s picking up an extra rotisserie chicken for a neighbor, or doing a grocery pick up for an elder, or helping someone with laundry or childcare.

Have you ever heard of "heat or eat"? It's what it's called when people have to choose -- groceries or paying their heating bills.

No SNAP means more people won't be able to afford energy either. If you've already donated, take one more step and call to support an emergency ban on utility shutoffs👇
Here's your guide to fighting utility shutoffs this winter. W/o the gov't open, few to no states will have funds for emergency bill payment program LIHEAP. I like how Zohran Mamdani scandals are like "He called his old cousin his aunt one time" and Andrew Cuomo scandals are like "He sexually assaulted 13 women."
