test the plausibility of this for yourself: ask "what sort of efforts would fully counteract the sociological effects of a system where people routinely sold their own children into labor camps?" and see how different your answer is from "years of open terrorism in defense of retrenching apartheid"
The south was a chattel slave empire until the 1860s and a de facto ethnic authoritarian state for the following century, which is well in living memory. I don't think we need to pretend that that hasn't left a distinctive cultural mark.

I use it in talks because it's pretty and also because, as an audience member, I am perpetually squinting at people's slides

reminded of eric williams's observation about britain's relationship to its history with slavery. "British historians wrote almost as if Britain had introduced Negro slavery solely for the satisfaction of abolishing it."
holy shit: “Among the 2,000 UK adults surveyed, 85% were unaware that Britain forcibly transported more than 3 million Africans to the Caribbean, 89% did not know that Britain enslaved people in the Caribbean for more than 300 years” www.theguardian.com/world/2025/n...

The algorithm brought me Cake’s “Short Skirt/Long Jacket” on my drive to work, and I am wondering what other songs celebrate female competence (“she’s touring the facility / and picking up slack”, “she uses a machete / to cut through red tape” etc) from a masculine POV. They must be out there, no?

I enjoy buying indie TTRPGs and immediately renaming them because the author decided to go with "game.pdf" or "final.pdf" (or "final1.pdf", which raises questions that ought to have been answered by the word "final"), but I think my favourite turned out to be named "pdf.pdf". Like, tell me nothing.

Disability is socially constructed - the accommodations we make reflect how we value, or don‘t, the people affected. Myopia is a disability but nobody insists your grades are unfair if you wear glasses.
A lot of education discourse is at root an inability to decide whether the purpose of our education system is to 1) teach material and measure learning 2) reward students who work hard 3) separate the smart kids (destined for smart guy jobs) from the dumb kids (destined to serve the smart guys)

Things I don't like about having a Mini: being on the road with SUVs whose hoods are higher than the top of my car.

"What if one of YOUR favorite politicians/celebrities/etc is on the list?" Did you all not notice how quickly we dropped Neil Gaiman when we found out about the things he did? Do you know how beloved that guy used to be and how loathed he is now? I think that right there should answer your question.

if u don't know SWITCHED-ON BACH is insane because the Moog synth is monophonic. meaning every single note of every single chord in every song had to be overdubbed separately. she had to be extremely precise & meticulous to make that album work

You don't end at the tip of your nose. You are your family, those you're in community with, our species, this world, and all their futures. These are part of you. You are vast, and stretch out into the future. You are already immortal.

"Being progressive" is just... acting like it.
"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.
