If you’re interested and don’t know where to start, here is a short list of essential Black American literature, according to me, in the order you should read them:

Their Eyes Were Watching God - Zora Neale Hurston
Sula - Toni Morrison
Giovanni’s Room - James Baldwin
James - Percival Everett

This is an excellent article, including this masterpiece of a line:

“Some critics have cited lax Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standards as the culprit behind the purported pumpkin perfidy, but those guidelines (in effect since 1938) don't appear to be predicated on squash subterfuge.”
Every year I see the panic-inducing headlines "IS CANNED PUMPKIN ACTUALLY PUMPKIN"

Designed to get us all to click because wHaT iS In oUr FoOd!?

And like, the answer is yeah ok it's not a Jack O' lantern pumpkin but the REAL answer is: WHAT THE FUCK IS PUMPKIN

Canned Pumpkin Isn't Actually Pumpkin?
Just ahead of the fall holidays, a viral social media rumor suggested the pumpkin in pumpkin pie is secretly produced from other squash.

This does not mean those accommodations are unfair.

What it means is that there are probably a lot more people who deserve accommodations but aren't able to get them because their parents have not been able to take the time and money to get them diagnosed.

That’s some really excellent phrasing inclusive of non-binary folks.

Quick tip for anyone switching to Qobuz: you can import your Spotify playlists and I suggest doing some tidying of your playlists beforehand. It doesn’t carry over date made or folders.

Not a big deal unless you’re like me with 100+ playlists, many without helpful names.

Checking my last Spotify Wrapped ever and truly the end of an era: “Dancing On My Own” not in the number one spot for the first time since 2022.

(Alternatively, hey check out this list of songs I’ve developed drag acts to)

people, you have the chance to put my book ahead of Olivia Nuzzi’s on the bestseller list. put aside all other considerations and think how objectively funny this would be. #1, that Mountain Goats guy. #2, Antivax Man Has My Heart. funniest list of the century. We can do this if we try

My post-Thanksgiving sales indulgence was an 8-pack of Ekone smoked oysters, and I’m pleased to say this was a top-tier decision.

I dunno all taste is subjective and I can't really hold it against anyone not liking a single movie because of how many reasons there are to like or dislike something. But if you don't love Muppet Christmas Carol I certainly don't trust you at all.
Ok, I have to ask. What's a movie that if someone doesn't like you'll hate them?

I would watch this movie
“Have Yourself A Merriam Little Christmas”

Merriam, a career-oriented lexicographer from the city, returns to her small town for the holidays and meets Webster, a ruggedly handsome librarian, who shows her the true DEFINITION of Christmas.

In my last repost, the quoted thread makes some assumption about “what if people abuse the system for extra time on tests, then we’ll have unqualified people in positions”

And my question is, if this is your first thought, what career-readiness skill do you think timed exams serve?

So here’s the thing: I, a certified Disabled™️ Person, do not actually care if anyone fakes for an extra 20 minutes on the test. I care deeply about how the fear of that very thing puts up flaming hoops disabled people have to jump through.

Maybe listen to disabled folk on this one.
Balancing "no person with a disability should be denied accommodations" with "it's important to discourage non-disabled people from pretending to be disabled to take advantage of these accommodations" is really difficult and I don't have a great answer for what anyone should do about it.

I’m not actually anti-AI. I am against the situation we’re in, where a small # of massive companies are illegally/unethically training ever-larger models that require plundering the natural world.

I’m against a world where “AI psychosis” is a thing and where chatbots tell kids to kill themselves.
I’ve been in this industry for almost 20 years now. I’m not anti-tech. I am immensely skeptical of how heavily generative AI is being pushed, even in use cases where it’s ill-suited.

I’m also alarmed by the increasing number of stories about AI causing harm because there are insufficient guardrails
