Every person who agreed and everyone who went along with the lie that "something had to be done" but that "something" was not "housing" is responsible in their part, however small. "Being lied to" is not an excuse for "believing lies." You cannot, famously, cheat an honest man.
Trump repeatedly cited homelessness as an excuse for flooding DC with cops and troops, conflating being unhoused with being a criminal. He's building on a bipartisan policy consensus that's surged across blue and red states and cities. New from me @newrepublic.com newrepublic.com/article/1991...
The Bipartisan Roots of Trump’s Cruel Crackdown on the Homeless
The White House is ordering brutal clearings and displacement of the most economically vulnerable Americans. Democrats and Republicans have jointly helped pave the way for this.

"If streateries are a pandemic relic, then they’re a monument to a moment when we correctly ordered our local politics around building community and creating a built environment that fosters maximum public benefit.

"We would be wise to re-commit ourselves."

Our latest opinion piece:
Opinion: D.C.'s new streatery rules are a costly miscalculation
The city's streatery guidelines are punishing small businesses and vibrant neighborhoods. We need a permanent solution to keep these staples of the city’s dining scene.

This is true but also when car owners reluctantly leave their vehicles they immediately conclude that city streets are ugly dirty and dangerous because of all the shattered glass and car parts lying around. But pedestrians and bikers didn't do that! You did that with your driving!
When you move around primarily or exclusively by car, you may not see the evidence of car crashes around you:

bent sign posts
broken car pieces
broken windshield glass
tire marks, etc.

For those who travel by 🚶🏻, 🚲, 🦽 & 🚌 these reminders are everywhere on sidewalks & streets.

This is very clumsily phrased as you'd expect; private ACA insurers do not receive "tax breaks," they receive "money." But the overall point is that the ACA is an extremely expensive marketplace because it covers so few people. The goal should be to move to bigger, not smaller, risk pools!
Here is my latest for @msnbc.com, on Trump's ill-advised concept of a plan for health care, which entails repealing the ACA, and redistributing private insurers' tax breaks to the people for what would essentially amount to an HSA, which is unhelpful if not wealthy. www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnb...
Opinion | Trump’s new plan for Obamacare leaves Americans to fend for themselves
We finally know what “concepts of a plan” looks like – and it’s not good.

I became quite fascinated by the Mormon church when my brother converted and one of the funniest, like, genuinely funny, things about the faith is that the LDS leadership has universally denied that the spiritual garments offer any physical protection from harm www.removepaywall.com/search?url=h...

I'm so glad I stopped playing MtG (decades) before WOTC turned into this weird power-protect tournament regime. Back In The Day you just played and sometimes you won and sometimes you lost, that seemed like more fun to me
The Vivi ban is the headliner here but good riddance to Screaming Nemesis

"Edge of Tomorrow" grossed $370 million, as you might expect from a summer action comedy-thriller starring two of the biggest actors of their generations. Who overlooked it?

"I wouldn't have missed a good breakfast for what [the Democrats] achieved"
I'm a SNAP recipient... for the last month I was tightening my belt, doing my best to eat cheaper and eating less so I'd have a little left over to help get me through when payments were cut. It was all for nothing. Fuck the dems who supported this.
I received this email about Democrats caving to end the shutdown from one of the SNAP recipients I spoke to:

BREAKING: We won!

Today the 3rd Circuit Court ordered the @post-gazette.com to restore our contract it illegally tore up 5 years ago. That’s our health care, PTO, right to a 40-hr. work week, short-term disability and so much more we’ve struck for 3+ years.

This is fine as an "explanation" for caving but not as an "explanation" for resisting in the first place. What piece of evidence would have convinced them to hold out longer? A Democratic electoral sweep? A collapse in Trump's approval? Those did happen and weren't enough to convince them!
like this is basically it, the melts melted under pressure

Nice illustration of the bizarre way Mayor Muriel Bowser Presents thinks about commerce: replace space for actual customers to sit and enjoy themselves with parking spaces for hypothetical customers driving in from out of state.
The Tail Up Goat street dining structure is being taken down this morning. The space will probably revert back to two long term, free parking spaces.

The same will likely be happening all up and down 18th Street in the coming months (though there it will become metered parking)

#MysteryMonday: Have you ever wondered why the 1 train stops at 18 Street, but there is no corresponding station for the 6 train on the East Side? Well, there was! These #NYTMCollection photographs show the 18 Street station under construction and in its early days.

Rand Paul, hemp's strongest soldier in the Senate, told Politico last night that he still plans to try to drag out the shutdown for as long as possible over its de facto ban of THC (which he first signaled he'd do early last week in a convo with hemp trade groups.)

Adam Carolla's career reflects the two most prominent explanations of the fascist right: "he was always like this, now he's just comfortable saying it," the "perpetrator" story, and "he really didn't used to be like this, but he was vulnerable to exploitation by fascist forces," the "victim" story

You can't cheat an honest man
To be clear: D senators trusting R senators who promise a vote on ACA subsidies at some future point is nothing more that a liar convincing a sucker. A sucker for believing the lie, and for believing that Johnson will ever bring it up in the House.
November 10, 2025 at 3:56 AM
It's worth not getting it too twisted: the reason Republicans and Moderate Centrist Democrats support cutting ACA subsidies and Medicaid is because restricting access to affordable health insurance is a way to discipline the working class, who have had it Too Good For Too Long

If necessary feel free to call senators from states you used to live in, giving addresses you used to live at, or as I did for one especially valuable promotion, the address of the Sydney Opera House.
Those of you with senators should call them and tell them not to fall for the GOP’s offer to hold the football. Please do it for the 700k people in DC who can’t.

Like everyone with a stake in this country I'm curious about whether Democrats will unconditionally surrender to this gang of villains, but two things can be true:
1) if you are certain of defeat you don't have a duty to fight to the death
2) if you are certain of defeat you don't get to lead again
